Drove a ford telstar 2.5 V6 for a couple of hours yesterday and about halfway through the drive with no real change to the road contour the temp gauge needle drifted down to the cold rest mark then back up to a normal position at about 1/3 the way up ( it took bout 30secs to do this only the once) . there was no apparent engine problems everything seemed normal . Is there any checks I can do or is this a job for an auto electrician ! any thoughts please!

Suspect the thermostat I'd say! Replace it as a matter of course they aren't all that much cost compared to an engine overheat result!

Loose wire or dodgy sender.

my temp gauge use to bounce up and down, we just used contact cleaner to clean the sensor. now it works fine ;-)
