GPS speed sender unit.

Has anybody used one of these to avoid getting into a transmission to repair the speedo drive!

My brother has a Peugeot 406 with the drive in the transmission broken and is considering an Australian made one as an alternative to all the labour costs involved with an OEM repair.

Any good! views!

Note 1 Speedometer means an instrument in a motor vehicle that continuously indicates to the driver the forward speed of the
vehicle in either kilometres per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). For clarification: This definition does not include the
speed provided by a GPS system.

What we are looking at is a GPS unit that delivers the pulse that any electronic speedometer requires and uses the existing dashboard unit.
The original needle displays the speed and the odometer works just like the original.

Thanks Motorboy, where does that get its signal from!

motorboy2011, Jul 2, 3:34am
it will just use a magnet and magnetic reed switch for signal. you could more than likely also use the signal from the factory speedo sensor, you would however have to mess around with the settings on the speedo to adjust it to read correct.

motorboy2011, Jul 2, 3:41am
you could also use an Apexi RSM, these hook directly to the ecu. I had an older one that only cost $60, it gave speed, rpm, max speed/rpm, 0-100 times, 0-400m times etc. it also had adjustable speed ratio so it would read correct with bigger or smaller wheels. The newer RSM's have even more features.

The problem we are trying to overcome is that the sender mechanism inside the trans is stuffed, hence the need for GPS feed.

.and hence why you're being told a GPS sender is not up to WoF standard.

Whether or not the WoF guy would notice is another thing.

GPS does not provide quick enough or accurate enough speed readings. It's not up to the job. If you used one to drive a car speedo it'd probably be quite obvious, especially when driving out of the garage workshop with no GPS signal lock, hahah, the dial would be completely spastic. Forget it.

motorboy2011, Jul 2, 5:20am
ah click, well id say an after market dirtbike speedo is the way to go. depending on the car, you may have problems if the ecu cant "see" the cars speed.whats the car!

motorboy2011, Jul 2, 5:28am
I know a way. Fit a magnet and reed switch somewhere on the wheel/driveshaft/cv etc, this is your primary signal. Then get on the jaycar website and buy their speedo correction kit (cat no KC5435). Now you can adjust the signal from the reed switch + and + 100%. Send this signal to your factory speedo :)

budgel, do you mean one of these!

bigfatmat1, Jul 2, 9:16am
budgel is it the drive assembly inside the gearbox or the sender external that is faulty!

budgel, Jul 2, 10:13pm
Yep that is the type of thing.

By the replies here it seems that there is very little experience of them.

budgel, Jul 2, 10:14pm
The drive assembly inside the transmission is stuffed and has fallen inside and cant be accessed without a teardown.
