Try Gaskin Ford. Although, a Pinto is ancient, I'd probably go for a 2.0 litre DOHC Duratec with quad carbs or something.

whats wrong with the motor its got !
If you have the old crossflow 1600 these little motors can and will go harder than a modified 2l pinto,
twin webers, a 1/4 race cam, boreout 20thou, nice 2" exhaust these motors are made for horsepower plenty of info on the net.

pintos are anchors.if you want power go for 2l duratec or sr20 .cheaper to make great power .

What do you mean by 1/4 race cam!

cuda.340, Jun 27, 5:31am
1/4 race cam is like a stage 1 hotter than stock

extrayda, Jun 27, 5:31am
1/4 race cam used to be quite a common expression - I had one in a 3k corolla motor, based on some BMC grind I was told, custom ground by Franklin Cams. They did an awesome job, really woke that little motor up.
Anyway, back on topic - I'm not sure what 1/4 (or was it 3/4) race cam means.Anyone!

cuda.340 - maybe mine was a 3/4 then, it was certainly much more than stock (loved to rev too).Fun to work on these old simple motors, and much easier than modern stuff.

If you are wanting to keep it Ford powered I suggest you try and get the 2.0 twincam motor from the last of the Sierra range. These were sold here about 1992 (Sierra GLX wagon, and imported Sapphire) and came with a strong 5 speed manual gearbox. They fit well into the mk2 Escort with minor mods to mounts, driveshaft and radiator brackets. Fitting anypinto in a mk1 requires a bit more engineering as there is less engine bay room, still achievable. Good luck.

If after a simple conversion by all means get a SOHC pinto, if after much more go consider a Zetec engine out of a pre 2001 Mondeo, that twin cam chain drive Sierra engine mentioned above is dreadful and is not only expensive and difficult to buy unless you also buy whats left of the rest of the car wrapped around it but is also stupidly hard and expensive to get spares for locally, they were never common and Ford axed them pretty quick. They are also head crackers. The only real good point was the later style 5 spd gearbox was a stronger design than the earlier one, apparantly the Zetec is compatible with these.

i did one up many years ago, a kent road cam was a great grind that produced good power,, fr 22 grind, i dont know if it is still available but look into it

hey mandy1971, the o'l pinto motor is pretty sturdy eng, to get hp these engines need a lot of cyl head work dont touch the intake ports unless you really know what you are doing, like many sohc eng of this head design you have to pay xtra special attention to valve stem length and choice of cam profile and rocker gear is critical for its life cycle 160-- 170 hp is obtainable with mostly stock parts.
look for a discussion of this engine by david vizard on the netthis man backs all his eng mods with dyno runs

nothing wrong with the pinto, a certain person in barrys point road used to use on in his escort 240hp, good head, std crank, steel rods and good pistons

tried the ford wreckersor completerusty seirragettheengine & 5speed box, easyconversionbit ofpanel mods tofloor& boxhousing & newg boxcross member .just shave the head for bit more comp&headfers. Makes it a good reliablelittle road car

what about a GTX 1800 doch motor and hair dresser car gearbox.

the-lada-dude, Jun 28, 1:02am
thati'll be bruce manning, their turbo version was reputed to be well over 450 + hp
as i say dont go crazy on cam lift / accyou really dont need to. with a good torqueyehg like they are you'll have more than enough grunt to get you in to serious trouble

Having worked a lot with Kent and Pinto engines I'd rather the Kent any time.If you must fit a worked 1600 Kent engine into your escort, unless of course you can afford and find a BDA.

Honda f20c and aisin gearbox from a s2000. If you are not a purist and have deep pockets.
Rotary Escorts appeal to a few.
Mitsi evo motor (without turbo) is possible, though nissan sr20 is more common conversion.
