Painters or jet ski owners, how the hell do you

Paint the hull of a big arsed jet ski. Got one to do but can not quite figure out how im going to get at it. Can they be rolled on there side safely!

grangies, Jul 18, 8:38am
Hang it.

Or stand it on its arse. I think they're designed to be 360'd.

I've worked on boats and jet-skis. Is it fairly new and four stroke! if yes, you can't turn it upside down (oil will leak in bad places inside the engines). You can hang it from the eyebolt on the front and the 2 D bolts on the back (or whatever they are called). You could turn it quarter turn one way, and then the other way.

Thanks, See the eyehole on front but cant see a way of hanging from back but will look. and standing it! theres the jet unit thingy hanging out the back so wouldnt want to rest it on that. and no way of hanging it in booth either but could in workshop maybe. Its a Honda one, still got cover on so not sure if its 2 or 4 stroke thing, 2 seater though. Just how heavy are they. would 3 guys lift it!

rob_man, Jul 18, 8:57am
And if it's a 2 stroke! I would think as long as the gas tank's empty you could pretty much do as you please with it if you took out the battery.

remove the engine/s, first seperate it from the jet unit, remove it, then turn the ski upside down to prep and paint

rob_man, Jul 18, 8:59am
Makes sense, are they easy!

gunhand, Jul 18, 9:02am
Hmmmm, we are panelbeaters and painters not sure if anyone really wants to remove the motor, unless they are simple lol.I reckon jet skis would be like chainsaws and weedeaters, you touch one thing wrong or look at them sideways they never go properly again.

rob_man, Jul 18, 9:19am
More like a floating ride-on.

ajk, Jul 18, 9:33am
should be reasonable easy to remove, just take off the links, remove the fuel lines and drain the tanks, dependant on the unit, most likely a rotax, undo the bolts holding it, and dependant on the model it may come out complete. If its 2 stroke, should be ok to turn upside down with all tanks drained. Call the manufacturer to confirm. When I repainted mine, I ended up seperating the motor and unit, then removing it, took about 40 mins

DON'T take the engine out, with most ski's you have to realign the driveshaft when you reinstall it using specialised tools. If it's a Honda it will definatly be a 4 stroke and a bitch to remove. Best bet is to tip it on it's side.

drive it through a pool full of paint!

Borrow apost hiost & suspend it undreneath

attitudedesignz, Jul 19, 1:58am
Yeah yeah, all good suggestions guys.

There is a WAY easier fix Mark.get someone else to paint it haha.

shuddupowh, Jul 19, 2:08am
Why would anyone want to paint their hull! You hardly gonna see it when its in the water and going to start getting scratched when it stops on the beach, goes on the trailer etc. I can understand fixing cracks and holes etc but being so worried as to painting it!

attitudedesignz, Jul 19, 2:17am
So you've never ridden a ski that's had a Teflon based paint on the hull then!

gunhand, Jul 19, 6:52am
It has a few gouges etc as well.I see it has a ski hook as well, so hanging it may be the go. Won't be removing the engine LOL. And sending it to someone else seems like a good idea but that may mean loosing another job off same person later on.
