dr.doolittle, Jul 30, 2:15am
Thought you'd jacked it in.

grangies, Jul 30, 2:17am
To be honest. For an old car like that, start at $5000 if it is already in real good condition, but be prepared for $20000 plus for a bare metal repaint.

1978regan, Jul 30, 2:22am
Guess she be primer for another 12 years lol

grangies, Jul 30, 2:33am
To add. If you have enough money, you are better off taking the car down the line to a place like where Gunhand works. From what I have read on here, they do a lot of older vehicles and also do them properly.

Don't take it to a major smash repair shop, because it may end up sitting in the corner with everyone cringing at it every time they walk past it.

There is a BIG difference between a smash repair shop and a restoration shop.

No option is cheap though.

Just sick of the old girl parked up in the garage .and will never sell her

gunhand, Jul 30, 2:49am
Heres a better way off looking at it. How much do you want to spend! whats your excpectations when finished. We only charge $50 an hour so prob cheaper than many. To give you an idea i would spend 2 to 3 8 hour days just polishing the car after paint if you want a super flat finish. If you want a modern peel finish prob 12 hours still. Now add the price of primer, paint ,clear and hardners thinners etc of prob around a grand. Now thats before any prep, panel work pulling apart and putting togther again. Then there might be all the hidden rust. Plus we generally wont work on full respray unless its stripped to metal or you sign a waver against future probs as a reult of not stripping it.
It soon adds up

Then perhaps you should have posted this in Gardening & DIY.

Guess you did it in spraying enamel.

trogedon, Aug 2, 2:17am
Good guessing. Materials cost under $200, I got a good gloss off the guy and I saw the car late last year (I did it 4 years ago) and it still looks good.

gammelvind, Aug 2, 2:30am
Enamel was used for painting cars up till about the 60's, these days used mainly on tractors and industrial equipment. A good paint, available in a limited range of solid colours only, gloss level reasonable not up to modern gloss levels but adequate for the target market. The downs are slow drying, limited colour range and subject to UV fading with age. The real up is price.

dr.doolittle, Aug 2, 3:23am
I painted(Sprayed) the cab of my Titan tipper with blue acrylic paint left over from painting my factory. The truck was blue anyway.
Still looks a treat, hasn't faded & no rust coming through yet. Mind you, the expanda foam keeps the water out.
The cost! Zip, nada, squat.

trogedon, Aug 2, 3:40am
Hey bud, I know about painting cars. I??

gammelvind, Aug 2, 3:47am
Sorry mate had no intention of offending you, it was more for other readers that may wonder why it costs much more in general to paint a car.
Actually I am agreeing with you.

alslayer, Aug 2, 3:48am
Seen a ute done in Warehouse house paint a few years ago, looked mint, but for how long! 90% in the preperation

thunderbolt, Aug 2, 4:51am
Thats how I took it , good to know the ins and outs.

I did a black (with red centre stripe) race car for a guy in a big, dusty garage. I set up a frame with tarps over it to provide a clean area that was open to the door. It was a nightmare spraying in the dark but the car turned out well.
