So what's the deal with these!I see they are super cheap on Trademe (under $100) but are they any good!Do they actually work!

I don't care about legality etc, just effectiveness, if anyone knows anything about them.

morrisman1, Nov 11, 9:47pm
Ive got a $75 one, off 1-day, and it is quite effective but it depends quite a lot on terrain. They dont pick up well when there is terrain between you and the cop. If there is no terrain between then you can pick them up several km away. One feature I would like is to block certain frequencies from sounding because really, the only frequency you want to hear is the police one, I don't care about all these roadside signs and automatic doors but this cheaper one wont let me permanently disable those alerts.

It would be interesting to put an expensive one like a bell or valentine next to it to see how much difference there is.

Thanks for the advice man!

U gt Wat you paid for. But you can pick up a decent top end one 2nd hand for 300 to 400.Beltronics, Valentine's and escort are ones to go for. You'll need to make sure ka, laser and k bands are enabled. Mobile camera vans back on k band not ka as have found out. Lucky I wasn't speeding.

I own an Escort.

The radar in police cars works on the Ka band, the detector generally gives more than adequate warning of proximity.

Speed cameras come in two varieties: fixed and mobile. The fixed ones work without a radar/doppler signal, the sensors are buried in the road in line with the camera box. Go over them above a certain speed, and if there's a camera in the box, it will take a photograph. You either have to know where they all are, or have a GPS-based detector with the locations stored, or not speed.

The mobile cameras work on the K band, which is a very "noisy" band. Lots of automatic door openers, advisory signs etc work on this band. The "beam" used by the cameras is fairly narrow, and not that powerful. If you are exceeding the speed limit approaching one, you'll get a warning, but you have to react to it immediately. Chances are that 9 times out of 10 (unless you know differently) you've just slowed down for a new roadside sign, or automatic door, or similar.

Get a gps-enabled detector. It will learn where the false signals are (over time) and filter them out. It's easier/more intuitive to react to an alert when it's not crying wolf all the time.

I have had a Valentine for many years and it has served me well.Picks up cameraa and I haven't noted any "noise" referred to above - and I certainly did with previous detectors.Obviously, the Valentine filters the junk out.

Only use it on trips though beginning to think I need one for Tamaki Drive - mufti heaven.

I use a Whistler XTR 695 and it has payed for itself many times over with good warnings for mobile Ka band patrols.

valentineone escort was the top 2 , and some discussion about laser blinders we had also

tantric5, Nov 12, 7:09pm
Both my cars have Valentines, hidden up above the rear view mirror and hardwired in

Awesome radars! I have had cheaper ones in the past, and well, they sucked and I mostly turned them off due to constant false alams.

No such probs with my Valentines.they also show if the radar is behind/in front/to the side.
