which is what will do the damadge

Why would running a richer mixture when running open headers or exhaust ruin the engine!over a long period of open exhaust system nothing will help the engine but over short periods like drags etc, then richer has got to be better than running lean. No!

morrisman1, Nov 26, 11:31pm
Umm can someone please explain to be how the engine can be damaged!

socram, Nov 26, 11:42pm
Tuning the exhaust length is important. Race Minis used to run short pipes for higher revs, longer pipes for torque, but from memory, the "tuned" part of it was down to a direct correlation to cc's of engine/cylinders and the cc's of pipe, primary and secondary.

I have never before heard of engine damage just because they are on open pipes, as surely, that is only down to the correct mixture/timing making sure the car doesn't run too lean/hot!

trademerob, Nov 26, 11:53pm
The above is right it will not cause damage.

kazbanz, Nov 27, 1:12am
Um sorry where do you get ritcher from !
Remove back pressure by running open pipes will have the engine run leaner.A "modern" car ie year 2000 commy has EFI which has some self "adjustment to cope with going to bigger pipes etc.
Run full open pipes for any time and the piston tops will most likely melt.
Ahh maybee I'm being melodramatic. Maybee open pipes won't be enough to cause a 2000 V8 commy to pop a piston.
Which is why I said --go to the library and read some books.
Even A book -"secrets of four stroke tuning" might be enough.

You could of surprised the enemy. they'd have been very quiet.I could of sworn I saw a Spitfire with full exhaust system on an episode of "Dads Army"

paul861, Nov 27, 2:25am
is my diesel tractor a 4 stoke! its only done 4000 hrs on a straight pipe

beast9, Nov 27, 2:44am
for legal reasons you must have one muffler under your car and if you do straight pipe it hello green sticker and you will just look like another common boy racer wannabe

phalanax, Nov 27, 1:40pm
Why bother with all that drama if u want it loud and the option of being able to put it back to standard. cut a hole into the existing mufflers somewhere where it can be easily patch welded when you get the pink sticker youd get having it straight piped anyway.lol

mrfxit, Nov 27, 2:02pm
Theres either a lot of MUPPETS on here at the moment or a lot of "leg pulling"

Race engines
Aircraft engines
Tractors
& . any other of those engines that come from the factory unmodified, is DESIGNED to run with a straight through open exhaust pipe.

Factory unmodified engines that are designed to run with a muffler exhaust system will very often have life span & performance issues of some sort UNLESS modifications are done to the rest of the engine management system to compensate for the open exhaust pipe.
This include the exhaust design, fuel management, air intake systems etc etc

Good answer mrfixit On a side note got my part of the insurance bill today cheers I owe you several bourbons we are all saving about 45% you are the man

mrfxit, Nov 27, 2:35pm
Hey thanks for that, A friend with spare Bourbon is almost always a good friend.
Sorry, got a lot on at the moment, the "45% & insurance" bit is in reference to !

dave653, Nov 27, 2:44pm
Exactly what happened to mine whena 'proper' muffler (custom made) was fitted. Would lose power over 3000rpm, running hot etc. Threw the ColourTune at it and all 3 carbs were way too lean. Fattened them up to perfect and had a lot more grunt than I expected with just a muffler change. Turns out the design of it 'encouraged' cylinder scavenging.

kazbanz, Nov 27, 5:03pm
Sorry guys I was in a foul mood yesterday.--What mrfixit and dave are saying is what I was getting at. But rather than giving the OP the answer I was obliquely trying to encourage them to find the answer themselves.

monaro_xxx, Nov 27, 5:53pm
straight piping your car will
1) make it go faster
2)make it handle better
3) make you a better driver
do'nt know why everyone does'nt do it!
(yeah.right!)

putting all the families insurances together

mrfxit, Nov 27, 7:34pm
Arrhhh yes, that was a while ago,Mmm something the reps don't often mention but IS available in their contracts.
Some reps don't like it because it cuts down the premiums they get.
COOL, happy you got a good deal.bet the "other half" is pretty happy too

mrfxit, Nov 27, 7:37pm
Who, what . bad mood, gee golly gosh, didn't even notice ;-)

When prompting someone to "do their own fishing", I prefer to say it straight up, but often give them a direction while at it.
If it gets up their nose, then maybe they shouldn't be asking on a public forum.

kazbanz, Nov 27, 8:20pm
LMAOok ok mate

splinter67, Nov 27, 8:34pm
hell yes

lordv81, Nov 27, 11:31pm
If you read my earlier posts i said that if you do not tune your engine to run a richer mixture while running open pipes you will get engine damage. At short periods of use a richer mixture will help.Just like at the drags you tune your engine for the best performance if running open headers, which should mean a richer mixture.
