Right. So they died.because.drum roll please.they hit the tree at speed! BRILLIANTLY deduced, and may I say a very worthwhile contribution.

For some reason, the news reports keep calling it a "van"!

skiff1, Dec 19, 9:30am
simply the obvious counter to those who claim speed had nothing to do with the accident, plainly it is obvious to all that speed was a critical factor in determining the severity of the crash. Along with the angle of impact, Seat belts and other SRS, the mass of the object struck and the structural design of the vehicle.

I think the other accident at the same time around tokoroa was a van!

Watching this on 3news/1news & thats the accident they constantly call the vehicle a "van" complete with video & photo's

This report has named the vehicle & yep it's a Honda
Another news report does mention 2 accidents in the same area but the other 1 was between a vehicle & a truck (2 dead)

I hit a tree at around eighty in a 1990 bluebird and she didn't look like that!

mrfxit, Dec 19, 9:48am
Yep see a few wrapped around almost touching ends & never looked likethat even after being cut off the tree.

Yes it is very tragic but to help prevent this happening again, we need to understand how & why it happened.

carmad50, Dec 19, 9:54am

The laws of physics are always going to denote.
That when leaving a road at(x) speed and smashing a tree off airborne-then smashing in to and wrapping around ANOTHER tree- the height maintained vertically is proportionate to the speed

Looks like the driver steering wheel air bag went off in the photo, maby front first into the tree !
