anglia_estate, Feb 20, 10:13am
Well that would be great if it covered what I was after I have looked through the LTSA site and it is not clear what the cc rating is for motorbike on car licence

bitchwitattitud, Feb 20, 10:17am
50cc or less

anglia_estate, Feb 20, 10:20am
Thankyou much appreciated

kazbanz, Feb 20, 7:26pm
its UNDER 50cc -or a true 49cc

smac, Feb 20, 7:28pm
You can't ride a motorcycle on a car licence. You can only ride a moped.

pauldw, Feb 20, 8:04pm
"moped??

inkapuka, Feb 20, 9:21pm
My old suzi 50cc 2. Stroker did 64 on a good day un modified

meathead_timaru, Feb 21, 9:48am
Shame it's wrong.

mrfxit, Feb 21, 5:01pm
Wrong .huh , LOL nah, it's right but it's only part of the restriction

"not over 50cc or 50km/h or 2 kilowatts"

meathead_timaru, Feb 22, 12:42pm
Wrong. You cannot ride any motorcycle, regardless of engine capacity, power output or top speed on any Class 1 driver's licence. End of story. No ifs, buts or maybes. Go not pass go. Do not collect $200.

smac, Feb 22, 7:03pm
Like I said.

mrfxit, Feb 22, 7:13pm
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/43/mopeds.html "You must have a driver licence. This can be any class of New Zealand licence. If you don't hold a New Zealand licence, you may be able to use an overseas licence" http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/11/driver-licence-classes.html
"What does each class cover!
Class 1 ??

casper35, Feb 22, 7:16pm
I have ridden a moped for years on a car licence as long as its under 49cc.

smac, Feb 22, 8:29pm
mrfixit you're missing the point. Yes you can ride a moped on a car licence, and the definition of a moped is above.

You can NOT ride a motorcycle on a car licence. Notice that the word motorcycle is not in the definition of a moped.

splinter67, Feb 22, 8:34pm
can you ride a motorcycle on a car license no you cant the license is to small to ride a motor bike on it

pauldw, Feb 22, 8:39pm
What the sticklers are saying is "Don't jump on an old 50cc Honda step-thru that's pretending to be a motorcycle."

meathead_timaru, Feb 22, 10:50pm
Not seeing 'motorcycle' mentioned there. Do you suppose you know why that is!

meathead_timaru, Feb 22, 10:51pm
Precisely. It's taking a while to sink in through the bedrock though, eh.

mrfxit, Feb 23, 12:34am
MMMM 2 wheels /a seat / handle bars + a petrol motor underneath.

Only real difference between a full size motorbike & a moped is how you sit on it & CC rating.
Seen plenty of smaller "motorbikes" creamed by mopeds
Dang it, I even used to won a 50cc motorbike & that was on a car licence

smac, Feb 23, 12:38am
You're confusing "what people get away with", with the actual law and applicable definitions. The OP asked a very specific question about the law, so that's the best answer to give.

mrfxit, Feb 23, 12:43am
LOL
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle

& Not even my personal definition

"There are around 200 million motorcycles (including mopeds, motor scooters, motorised bicycles, and other powered two and three-wheelers) in use worldwide"

smac, Feb 23, 12:46am
You're know you're in trouble when you're quoting wikipedia.

We're talking about the definitions as set in NZ legislation. Give it up man.

mrfxit, Feb 23, 12:50am
The only real definitionto worry about is the legal difference in top speed/ cc & KW

If it's .

over 50cc
Over 2kw
Goes faster then 50kph

Then you need a "motorbike" licence.
If it's ON or under the above spec's then you can ride it on a Class 1 (car) licence.

The type the op is asking about is most likely a moped
