1974 ford d1618

bigmacca, Feb 20, 1:29am
Hey guys just trying to get my old ford d1618 thru a cof. it failed on a rumbling front driverside wheelbearing. ive just been quoted $1200 for a new replacement. Not really an option atm so was just wondering if anyone might happen to have one hiding away in their shed? or failing that know where to look. I will try some of the people wrecking them over the weekend but just thought I would try my luck. cheers

Pull them out and get the numbers or dimensions. Bearings aren't that dear surely.

I used to work on old fords like that years ago for a road construction company. We used to just pop off to the engineering supply shop and grab some new bearings off the shelf. They weren't worth a fortune or extra strange shape or anything. just ya know, round, and tapered.

And Imperial sizes which can be hard to find sometimes now. But that's $500 per bearing even allowing 3 hrs to do a half hour job.

is this a bedford years ago i recall local suspension place had to order special bearing for 1200$ that was the only option or machine the part to fit a other more cheaper common size bearing in there.

I served my apprenticeship on theses trucks, and after wracking my brains can't think of anything that is so difficult or different involved that might put up the cost. Should be cheap as chips.
Can't remember if front hub was D1000 type oil-filled or standard D series screw on cap but whatever, the bearings should be the same style. Just pull it all to bits, if you can, and get part numbers as stated above. Of course they are not Ford parts but simply industry standard bearings.
PS nice old trucks too.

cheers guys. the truck is sitting at the mechanics in town but will be getting the bearing numbers off him . just to clarify its 1200 for just one bearing not including gst, freight or labour. I would even settle for a good 2nd hand bearing but that's really my last option.

Tow it home and do it yourself. He's trying to take the piss, out of your wallet.

bigmacca, Feb 20, 1:11pm
not an option. im capable of doing it but I don't have any free time before the recheck needs to be done.

So what? Another cof check will cost how much compared to your $1200 mechanic? And get yourself on eBay if the bearing is an oddball thing.

so just pay the money if you cant do it

Worth checking availability & pricing from these guys.

Might have some luck here but bearing numbers would be off help.

BNT would be sure to have what you need at realistic prices too.

A bearing specialist should have them. There are still things out there using imperial sizes. american things for instance.

bigmacca, Feb 21, 12:08am
cheers guys once I have the numbers I will be calling a few bearing places. I have found a 2nd hand one but don't want to buy it unless there is no other option.

Have you actually cleaned and examined old bearings first? If they aren??

everything happened on fri and havnt had a chance to sight the bearing. I trust the bloke doing the work and would rather have a new bearing put back in. handbrake is fine. brakes were rebuilt and no issues on the braketester.
