I work in a job that many 'motorhomers' arrive to work the season during winter and they love the lifestyle, have done it for years. They know where all the work is if they want/need it and the only reason most give up is ill health. Most are retired or taken early retirement but they do retain an interest in property somewhere in the country. One man this year is 78, works like someone half his age and he and his wife fill their retirement years just travelling and working wherever they want. Even the ones I knew who have had to give up for whatever reason certainly don't regret their time on the road Some have dogs with them too and the ones in the bigger homes tow a small car to give them more freedom.

I'm thinking of doing it myself in a small way within the next year or two.

Rubbish. Obviously you have not spent much time in one or travelled far. If you want to see the real NZ then a motorhome/camper is the only way to go. Being a responsible Freedom Camper beats hands down staying at home and watching the mad box. And the costs are not high, not like running a car where you do far more k"s per week than you do in a motorhome as you tend to stay longer to explore the area . Accommodation costs are Zero. Plus over Mid December to end March we offer our house out as a holiday home for $170 to 350 per night, depending on the dates.
Plus most motorhomes are good for at least 500,000 k's (we have a converted bus) so If it has 250,000 k'S on the clock when you buy it it will take you 8 to 10 years or longer before you need to think about any major repairs.

Had to laugh ! You have your fridge/freezer/pantry on board plus hot/cold water and full sized shower. Internet, TV, the whole works including surround sound.

Go for it while you have your health. You will make many new real friends on the way and will not regret it. Good luck. Suggest you belong to www.nzmca.org.nz to take advantage of the many benefits to members.

Our friends (not quite retirement age yet) have sold their business, rented out their house (Christchurch) and gone off caravanning.
They signed up here and so do some house sitting as they travel.

Just back from a Tikitour of North Island, sold their nice big caravan and bought a new, bigger caravan!
They love the lifestyle.
We talked to them about their choice and they certainly would not go with a motorhome type of vehicle.
With the 'van they just park, unhook the tow car (well Prado actually) and then can just drive around the area for sight seeing, shopping, etc.

All mod cons of course like shower, toilet, satellite TV, etc. Built in heaters for those nippy nights.
Missus likes the idea too, but we would go with a caravan too.
Really makes more sense to us, but YMMV.
