My first car was a 1929 Cheve 4 cut down to a truck. Solid steel 21 inch wheels with split rims which came off if the lugs weren't tightened, Common occurence in the Kaikoura township. Usually seen around with the back full of teenagers, possibly drunk. A crime nowdays but seemed ok in the 60's. I loved it to bits

1961 Ford Anglia.
Despite my best efforts, no fun was found.

a35, driving up and down round and round multi story car park Auckland in first. Had a cog missing so made terrible clanking sound.
Otherwise a totally joyless car that I quickly moved on from. But at 15 you gotta start somewhere.

4 year old 71 HG 186 Kingswood wagon. Done over 100,000miles in 4 years.
It belonged to the Dunlop rep and after 100,000 miles it is replaced and they get to keep the old one as a bonus and incentive to look after it.
It was almost mint and Cost me $2k.
I had so much fun in that wagon. GOOD TIMES

An 850 mini bored out with A40 Devon pistons, and other go-fast bits.
I loved that little car, It took a thrashing but I became pretty good at fixing it.
It would probably seem as slow as a wet week by today's standards.

co-owner of a 1937 austin 7, first speeding ticket in that, got off the speeding ticket

On grounds it was impossible for it to go that fast?

Started driving in 94 in a 1st version E36 91 BMW 318i which didn't exactly endear me to my peers at school. Had immense fun thrashing the snot out of it, cruising around with mates and entertaining the girlfriend. That car had 120k when I got it, and when I murdered it in 01 it had 412k on the clock, still going strong and absolutely zero breakdowns. Made me a fan of the marque for life. Now on my 4th.

'69 Escort with 1600 GT motor, about 8 years old and with 100,000 miles on the clock.
Motor pooped itself within a month of buying it. Fun part was that with help of a couple of mates (one an apprentice mechanic), we lifted the engine out, had the block bored, new pistons, cleaned up the head/valves, threw a new clutch in for good measure, and had it back on the road in a few days - for total cost of a couple of hundred $ (vs my meager pay of about $80/week at the time). The car cost me $2k - that was about the going price, about 25 weeks entire wages. On minimum wage these days, that would be like buying a $12,500 car - you'd get something quite nice.

Austin Maestro Van, the 'shaggin' wagon'. Did some great tours of the South Island, mattress in the back. It was a piece of shit, but I loved it!

74 Hillman Hunter meant freedom and a way out of auckland revving like hell needing a 5th gear. Did great wheel spins. I was always tuning and fixing it but thought that was normal till i bought a japanese car many years later.

Morris 8 Series E Van. Shortened it by the length of a number plate - not sure why. Had a lot of fun and drove it all over the South Island before I was 18. Got a mini then.

1937 Austin 10. on a trip back to Akl from Hamilton (mid 60s) I actually passed an E93 Ford prefect (the only car I managed to pass) just north of Huntly, I got to Te Kauwhata and got pulled over by a Cop who told me to speed it up as he thought my car was the old jalopy holding up traffic. Told him about the E93A I had "Flown" past.

mk1 cortina - was known locally as the sprint car, use to blow away 6 cylinder torana's round local town circuit. Blew away the ecilop's one night in Ch-Ch, were chasing us after two chicks in an escort we were following while blasting air horns on off pulled over to some parked cops and pointed to us. Did handbrakie round a road island and entered a side street and we all ducked down as the flashing blues carried on straight ahead.
Fast and dumb back in the day.

Austin A60 countryman. Reliablie (ish) so long as I didn't exceed 50mph. Had a nasty habit of blowing the top of a piston at the oil ring if I did 60mph for any length of time. Happened on the dessert road while heading to Tauranga, off with the rocker cover out with the two push rods and drove on with three cylinders. Was somewhat noisy and the oil turned into glitter slime but got there. Whipped the sump off when I got there, popped a second hand piston back in, (no machining required) lol, and drive back next day.

I left school and saved every penny so I could buy some wheels. Couldn't believe my eyes when a mate and I pulled up outside a car dealer in his Mk1 one Thursday night, and sitting inside the showroom was a Toreador Red Mk1.
A quick calculation worked out that if I got the 7 quid back off my brother that he owed me, I'd have enough for the deposit.
It just so happened that our neighbour was the salesman, so when we shot off home and told the old man, he rung him, and we all went up for a touch.
The following night - Fri 18th 1966, I was cruising the streets with the Mk1 gang.

Fun was had within, and fun was had fixing it.
It seemed that every time something broke, it was replaced with one from a later model. It finished up with a Mk3 motor & box after the motor chucked a rod. When the diff became too noisy, a Mk2 diff went in there, and because a Mk2 steering box was part of that deal, it eventually replaced the snookered Mk1 box.
After breaking the second front stub axle, a Mk3 front suspension went in there, and the vacuum wipers were even replaced with Mk3 electrics.

It's true of the saying that if they've got wheels or tits, they're gunna cost you money.

52 Humber 10, total rebuild from a bare shell, bare side valve block & a paddock full of spare parts at 15 years old.
Lots of fun building it & a huge learning curve.

Mk1 Cortina. Let a chick drive it and she rolled it.

I owned it for 6 days *grumpy face*

Mini 1000. Watched, with surprise, as the speedo went way past the end of the numbers one day.
