As long as it takes to scan for fault codes.

The procedure with most faults is all about checking what is working ok then eliminating that from the big picture. One has to begin with simple and easy checks which become more complex as the process continues. This is not always a straight forward procedure especially with an intermittent fault or engine misfire problem or excessive fuel consumption issues. The ford focus thread on here is a good example of out of control fault finding. There are probably over 2000 different types of vehicle models and engines so to be an expert on all of them is near impossible. The manufacturers make things more difficult too by retaining the specialist information on newer vehicles. most modern workshops now charge at least one hour labour just for research. The technician has to spend a lot of money on hi tech equipment and training.
All of this has to be paid for by the customer.

I had a root canal recently. it took 2 hours. take a guess at the price?

$1500

No. The closest a scan tool might get to directly telling the tech that a cat MIGHT be restricted is a MAF or MAP and/or cat efficiency and/or exhaust temp sensor or O2 sensor code, entirely dependent on how good the tool is and the age and type of engine management/emission control system its got. It may require some dot joining and close data monitoring, IF it logs anything at all. Other non electronic testing would be required.

almost. I reckon my dentist charges $500 per hour plus materials and GST
It 's getting to the point where mechanical technicians need the same amount of learning. just imagine if we all charged a similar rate for our labour . That new boat i have my eye on will become a reality pretty quick

Yeah well I just paid $40 to get radio code for my BMW after boot light switch failed & light stayed on . 30 secs on their computer- equals $80 minute $4800 hour expensive ?

Not really because the boat builder and the marine mechanic would also want $500/hr

Interesting, A good mechanic would be able to figure out what's wrong in a shorter time than an incompetent one. So the good mechanic would end up charging a lot less than the incompetent one. It looks like incompetent mechanics make more money than good mechanics.
