Funnily enough not that long ago I worked for a guy who was direct competition to Jollys & he HATED him, reckoned Jolly had put him out of business, I soon found out why. He had a stock of old rims & centres & a customer wanted set of his rims for a retro car. Being the only qualified fitter/turner in the place I was given the job so I tacked the centres in to the rims at the required depth, jumped onto the lathe, & started clocking up. After a while the owner came over bitching & moaning I was taking too long, ripped off the DTI & put up a pointer saying 'both outside (circumference) & face, within 1/8 inch by eye is ok, stop F'ing about'
So 3mm by eye, which for some could be a lot more depending on who's doing the job, on both planes, no wonder his wheels were crap, he went out of business & Jolly was so successful. As a turner I was horrified & got it as close as I could with the pointer which still would've been ok but not 3mm for sure.
Talking to an old hot rodder mate he said he'd bought a set of his wheels back in the day & they truly were shite, car had a shimmy & vibration as soon as they were fitted, tried taking them back but just got sworn at (sounds right to me), got a set of Jolly wides & smooth ride straight away.

I regret parting with my 1969 XW station wagon, sold for $1200 in 1996, sold to a painter over on the coast, it was my 3rd car I was sixteen, and it was in mint condition, jeez I miss that car, shudder to think what it would be worth now, sigh. oh and a 79 Toyota sprinter SE coupe, not as flash as some here, but good memories and fun to drive. Sold for next to nothing.

Had them too - the old style, widened on the outside flange. (Before that was outlawed)

Guess it would have to come down to the car I would want to buy back - so that would have to be my Mk l Zephyr. Given that the front doors and roof were the only body items left un-modified.

My 73 Mach l CJ manual, would have to come next.
After the Boss was discontinued in 71, there were a heap of the Boss R Code engines left. They could be ordered throughout 72, but the grunt regime was dumped in 73. There was still some R Code engines left, and I know of one that was ordered by a Ford worker, but it was VIN'd as a Q Code. They were only set up to run with a manual box, so Ford would'nt have just left them in the corner, and would have used them up as a Q Code when someone ordered a manual.
Buy the way mine went, I'm pretty sure it was one of those R Codes.

I can remember the Lawrence boys (Graeme, Tony and Brian) widening wheels in their workshop in Wanganui in the early - mid 60's pre Jolly Wide Wheels. Those were the days, making your own manifolds, trying different carb setups. mostly on English family sedans.

I have this barn in my dreams where I keep all my old loves and to many to list but the car I miss the most is not the rarest, coolest, most valuable or oldest I have owned. In fact when I bought it it was one of my two lest favorite falcons ever but fast become a great joy. XR6 ED station wagon. Drove so well and was so comfortable! Sold that for a 290kw BA, not a nice drive, then an FG. I want the ED back!

bryshaw, Nov 9, 4:42am
I had one of those, but you had to be a contortionist to canoodle in that small area.

A35, Here too, first car, bit missing out of first gear, brakes that wouldn't stop me on long hill. Didn't impress anyone. Got a Renault dauphine that seemed hugely superior. Then, for some reason, a 1948 Morris ten that was terrific car, heaps of snogging space.

1939 Chrysler. Gave it away about 1973 for the cost of the set of tyres I'd just put on.
Told the young bloke to keep an eye on the radiator. he didn't and it finished up in a wreckers yard. Passing the yard some time later, called in, asked them about wrecking a 39 Chrysler. "Never wrecked that one mate" was the answer. Did see it once on the road. Beautiful black machine that I got up to 90 MPH on the North West Motorway once.
Later on had a 1987 Holden Calais, 6 cylinder 3 litre Nissan motor. Needed a RUV, so sold it at auction. Done close to 300,000k, never had the head off, economical, comfortable and could it go.
Checked it out on Carjam and 6 months after I sold it, it was reported as stolen.

justwotever, Nov 9, 7:12am

1979 Sunbird with 6 cylinder. Some swine stole it.

1987 Mitsubishi Sigma. 2l with 5 speed. Was the flashest car I had ever owned and was beautiful to drive.

tamarillo, Nov 10, 3:43am
Darryl, you need to get out more and get some better wheels!

skiff1, Nov 3, 9:23am
lol! I had a Sunbird too and loved it. First car I ever owned and it changed the world for me.
Sigmas on the other hand were God awful horror shows and the people at Mitsubishi should be ashamed of themselves!
