Whats good and bad about a 1974 capri 1600 cc manual lm used to mgbgt

Good: A Classic Bad: Has an Escort motor (1600 OHV Kent) in it. You need to find the 3.0 V6. Or at least the 2.0 OHC Cortina powered one.

Could be worse, might have been the 2.0 V4!

Good: Its a Ford, collectible, good looking, pretty nimble, simple engineering, easily and cheaply upgraded. Better weather protection than MG.
Bad: Its a Ford, RUST, some Capri specific parts can't easily be obtained unless you import, engines don't like unleaded much and need mods, interiors a bit cramped if you or passengers are largish, anything not fully restored already will need $ thrown at it, not really a sophisticated car.

I had a 71, if it is the same model, they were notorious for snapping clutch cables. I thought it was just mine, but was at a bbq recently with a couple of old school mechanics and they both said the same thing.

1600 Kent was a brilliant little engine.74 Capri was also a very reliable car. They suffer from rust when neglected.Capri was a basic car.

Absolutely everything is still available for an MGB GT including a brand new bodyshell. There are also specialists around to look after them.
Handling is probably much better than the Capri and although I haven't checked, probably performance and economy too.
A 2 litre Capri maybe, but definitely not the 1600cc. The 3 litre Capris I have driven seemed to be quite sloppy, particularly at the front and the brakes were a bit of a worry.

Don't know about a Kent 1600. Doesn't spin my wheels, but on the other hand, the Mk1 3 litre Capri was quite a performer in its day. I remember test driving one in 1973, it was a choice between it and a 2 litre Cortina GT. Used common sense and family obligations (2 kids) and bought the Cortina, a decision I've regretted ever since. Back to the OP, in my opinion. the MG B GT is a more desirable car than a 1600 Capri.

Having owned a near new 74 Capri (way back when I was a lad) with the 1.6Kent motor I can agree about the power. However, being a lad, I whipped on the Weber carb and manifold from the GT version, plus a set of flows (after market). The GT cam grind is crap, so I had Kelford grind a profile for me. I worked at the time with one of the Stokes brothers (racing hydroplane boats), and used info from him for the required cam profile. Lowered the front suspension one and a half inches as she went a bit 'floaty' over 90mph. The suspension job tightened the handling up nicely, and 'Oh Boy'! what a little rocket ship. Yes, get the Capri. You can have a ball with it. I know MG's, etc as at this time I worked for NZMC (MG's, Coopers, etc). I didn't buy one of them because the wee Capri just looked way nicer I thought.

That 1.6 ltre motor will outlast the 2.0 ltr but won't have the power. If it's all standard a 1.6GT capri would be my pick. Great classic car, depends how much too pay. They all rust heaps. MG are not expensive at all, I think a decent capri wil be worth more than the MG, not buy much though. Simple easy to keep on the road. It's up to whatever you want.

Nothing wrong with that why you gagging doesn't have to be a genuine Perana, have stuck a V8 in my Ford because it only had a 1600 in it.
