The inner roof of my car is currently bare metal. I have a thin vinyl fabric roof lining to put in. I was intending to do so without replacing any foam / padding to the inner roof which would sit underneath the roof lining, any reason I should put some in that I am overlooking or is it not really needed? If so where to get suitable material and how to attach?

The car may have unpleasant resonation without the foam. It'll probably be noiser too

You can get a felt/mat like material that is good to use in these situations.

Google it, there is a place online in NZ that has it, can't recall name. But you'll also need special glue that can withstand the high temp an inner roof gets in NZ sun, else it will fall off quickly. I looked at costs of glue, lining, and had it done professionally for same money. I took the boats that the lining sticks into out and had it done. But sounds like you don't have that board at at all?

There is sound deadening stick on stuff looks like perforated cardboard , like they used before they went to the f glass liner panel . F2 glue will do 1L tin brush on section at a time .
