Looking at buying a van which has a current WOF but there is a strip of metal welded along the side edge of the roof. The owner says it is a legal rust fix but I'm not so sure. It looks like someone has just welded over the rust.

That's what it sounds like to me also OP. A professional rust repair, where they cut out and replace with new panel steel would be barely, if at all noticeable. You have to wonder what other secrets it's hiding? Probably full of bog and who knows what else. I'd suggest give it a miss.

Go to my trademe. Select my photos Select upload pic Then once it's uploaded, open the pic, go to the address bar, highlight it, select copy, then paste the link here so we can see it.
I find it easiest to open another tab when doing this, so you can flick between the two.
just move on to another van if theres 1 theres 2 or theres a reason that this particular van took yr fancy and normally its price so there you go if its that cheap then its probably worth a punt put it through a vtnz check yrself they soon tell you

they generally rust on the gutter. if its higher than that then its suspect. also check the around the windows and door handles.
