I was also wondering about this as an option. If you do, come back for advice as we can point you to videos on how the job is done, workshop manuals and cheap parts. There is a locking tool you need too but it should also be cheap. Being a common issue everything is cheap due to volume and it being more than likely the most popular engine in the world.

To close the circle on this post, it's just come back from the shop working nicely. The repair cost $1900. The mechanic, which specialises in Euro vehicles, said they'd seen a few of these. Despite manufacturers having switched to chain driven engines some still stretched and required replacement. Sounded like most in the 100,000 plus range but they'd done some as low as 60,000km. He said that VAG had changed the design of the chains a few years back indicating that there was a problem but he hadn't seen any enough recent ones to know whether the problem was fully solved.

Good on you for getting back to the post with the outcome, well a bit of pot luck for the other owners out there I suppose. That would be so disappointing. I have never had trouble with any of my cars and SUV, some up to 300k. Think I will stick to what I know. Good luck for the future.

crikey that must be really annoying for you. Buying a car with a built in unrepairable gearbox fault is bad enough but for the camchain to also need replacing at 100k must really tear ya undies. The very idea of a chain is that you don't replace it for may hundred thousand k's

Heaps of nissaan also. and toyotas vvti stops working but that wont be noticed by nana drivers who fill there engines with restamp warhouse oil instead of the factory speced oils.

pshack, Thanks for coming back and sharing the end of the story with us.
A Golf that is running and driving well is a nice car to have.
