Electronics can take a hit that will not necessarily do immediately obvious damage but weaken components to cause early failure. The end result is the failure of a component within a few months that should have lasted for years. That is why surge protectors on domestic appliances are a good idea as insurance claim can be tricky if it fails some time after the spike.

Me too inc BMWs Mercs ive owned , most were dead flat due to something being left on overnight . Just used ordinary leads but positive from donor to an earth on the car . Just didnt rev the donor car . then took leads off & let the car idle for few minutes before use
. And as for charging first in the real world how many even have a battery charger & prepared to wait several hours for it to charge .Or do they carry it to A garage

A car battery will get a quick 'surface charge' off the connected battery if its left connected up for several minutes.

While it might start the car good once or twice, if its not charged properly, that might be all it gives out, if its not being properly charged once the cars started. Like if the headlights are on. Or the battery's dead flat to start with.

I can just imagine the scenario of which kaz alludes to in post #16.

You jump-start the car and everything seems OK.
The family member borrows it, and then you get a call.
Car is parked in a parking building miles away and the crap-heap won't go.
They have got a ride home, which is miles away in another direction, and you need to go and collect the key (that's if it's not left in the ignition) and go and collect the stupid car, coz it's all your fault!

Good part about it, is they don't want the dunga of a thing any more.
