Easy to fix them yourself with basic tools, and if you needed a starter you could go to the wreckers and get one without having to know what day of the week/month/year your car was built. The more components you have in something the more likely one is going to go toes up.

Not much point in going to the wrecker for a starter motor now. similar price to buy a new or reconditioned one online. A darn sight easier too.
I don't see what's so hard about looking at the part number first? Not that starter motors tend to change much.
