2007 Mustang servicing

rabidginfairy1, Aug 4, 11:07am
Hey all, I just bought a 2007 GT Mustang. It has a miss and needs a couple things done before I'm comfortable driving it. Just gathering quotes at the moment, Ford are wanting to charge $60 per spark plug. Gets me thinking. is it better/easier to source parts yourself online? Or is this risky? Any advice for a newb?
Thanks a lot!

Online is always going to be cheaper, but you do have to factor in shipping prices. https://www.rockauto.com/ is a great site with pretty quick delivery.
Heavy/bulky items like brake discs (for example) will cost heaps to ship whereas items like waterpumps, belts etc. arent too bad.
Rockauto is good because there is usually a choice of different quality/priced items for each job.
Re your sparkplugs, go to the site, select those you want, before the sale is completed you will know the shipping price. Then proceed if it suits you.
Remember that it will be priced in US dollars.

I've also bought stuff on Ebay which can be a bit of a gamble and tends to have slower shipping times.

Maybe suss out the various Ford or Mustang clubs to see what suits also, for info etc.

Absolutely, the genuine Ford (Motorcraft) service parts for your car are available much cheaper in USA than here, if they are readily available locally at all. This especially applies to long life spark plugs. I'd price up not only plugs but also air/oil/fuel filters and perhaps a trans service kit too if it's auto, and bring in a couple of each. Oil filters can sometimes be bought in packs of 6 or 10 and even freight inclusive work out much cheaper than buying aftermarket ones here. It would pay to find out for certain what is causing the misfire first though.

check out your area and see if there is a garage that specialises in performance cars

You can get cheap shipping by NZ post, who will give you a US address to forward to, then NZ post send to NZ, I got a locking fuel cap from mopar and the postage went from $60.00 to only $18.00.

Is it the 3valve v8? If so buy the listle 65600 or 65700, they have a habit of leaving 1/2 the spark plug behind if it is the engine I’m thinking of the thread and body comes out but the bits below seize in the head. The listle tool is a fantastic fix. I’ve used it once with great results. 5 mins a piece to remove the broken ones with that tool!
If it’s not that engine disregard my entire post.

Diagnostic check first.
By someone who knows what they're doing.

Rock Auto rocks . If you tend to hang on to the same car for a few years , you can buy all your service parts in bulk in 1 hit & pay peanuts for the pleasure .

Just a couple of questions:
Did you know it had a miss when you bought it?
Did you buy off a dealer in NZ?

Practically. I dont have the time to buy online when servicing my vehicle. I just go and get what I need from scautos/ripco or the stealership. its 10 or so minutes away and after an hour or 2 its all done. how much dosh are you gonna save on a set of plugs anyway. as for brands. ngk/bosch/champ etc. surely the plug gap/thread depth spec is more critical ,also as for the miss it could be a lead or otherwise and not the plug. plenty to check . lol.

NZ distributors of spark plugs often think that Iridium=Unobtanium and charge accordingly, I've seen pricing discrepancies of up to $30NZ PER PLUG over the US prices, this adds up if you need eight of the sods. The saving can more than pay for several other service items.

Mine has missed a beat on a couple of occasions, but nothing that a good blow-out won't fix.
When it's been plugged-up months later, it showed which cylinder it was.

Go and get it diagnosed.

What do the OBD codes say? Have you given the horse a good boot like "lookoutas" says.?
