Car is going into garage but they can't fit us in till next week. Won't be driving it till seen. Just wondering if anyone has a rough idea of what's wrong, ie if its something expensive. Driving yesterday the rev needle flared once then normal again. Slight shuddering once then normal. Then coming home car didn't feel right, exclamation light in a circle came on, rev needle higher than usual and car like it was working too hard, slight fluctuation pull when driving, thank you

On a Focus the ! inside a 'toothed cog wheel' indicates a drivetrain fault. It does sound ilke a problem with the transmisison from your description. Could be anything from top up the fluid to replace the auto.

Had issues with a family menbers 2001 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec sedan,
It would flare and seem to miss gears and have various electrical hiccups.
The 2 problems were diagnosed and the 'A' and 'B' transmission shift solenoids were faulty. common issue apparently, trans sounds like it needs a full service besides that. do it any way would be prudent. ( I imported replacements at around 1/3rd the Ford NZ list price ) transmission sorted, pan off fluid and filter replaced twice as fluid was rather discoloured, all good with trans after that job done .
Car had various electrical issues with engine sensors and dash lights etc flickering . even going out odd times , fault diagnosed as system under volt due to battery packing up. and settling down after a short while once alternator bought voltage up a bit which over taxed the alternator (luckily not damaging alternator but checked over in case of problems. functioned within spec and bearings and other components appeared recently serviced . as it was) replaced battery with new one of correct spec, fault codes cleared and been perfect ever since.
O.P. I would advise, go to a Ford service centre and have their franchise diagnostic gear test the electrics for fault codes . that should point you in the right direction. Good Luck.
