Outlander for the school run, forget the Murano, the X-Trail for anything off-road.

Ok cheers.
I was leaning towards the Outlander. Im looking on behalf of my son and his wee family.
Second vehicle. They live in Q'town, so mostly back and forth to work, the odd weekend away to Dunners, Chch, Milford, etc, over the hill to Wanaka, . up and down the ski fields in winter, throwing the kids bikes and junk in the back etc.
Pretty much all tarseal road driving. Gravel roads, but nothing bad off roads. I could imagine they may go to Macetown, but that would be the limits of their off roading.

In my experience the murano and Xtrail are about the same for internal space. But the murano is a fair bit more thirsty. My pick given your description of the usage would be the X trail

How much open road performance you desire is the critical bit here. Murano has the clear edge over the other two if its important to you, otherwise then yes the Mitsi would be the best bet.

For open road a car would be nicer to drive than an suv.
