What could be wrong with my rebuilt Auto?

nzoomed, Dec 3, 7:15am
Its a Borg warner 35 out of a morris/austin 1800/landcrab.
We rebuilt the whole transmission and it makes a terrible knocking sound, initially we thought the pump was the issue, as we didnt think it engaged gear, but after trying the car today, it actually engages into drive, but this is the unusual thing, it stays in drive the whole way down from reverse to low, including neutral, only in park is when its not engaged, we cant get it to go in reverse, it only wants to go forward no matter what position the selector is in! lol Im pretty sure the selector is adjusted correctly and cant find anything obviously wrong, either way, it will probably have to come out, unless its something simple like the valve body, cant explain what the noise is though.

I can offer no help at all - but I have to ask - why would you do this!

nzoomed, Dec 3, 7:22am
What do you mean exactly!
Borg warner 35's are a simple transmission, my father is a car enthusiast and wanted to give it a go, from others experience, we were advise it was easy enough to do, and we did everything by the book, and i cant see what would be wrong.

mm12345, Dec 3, 7:27am
That's fair enough - being an "enthusiast" explains the otherwise irrational. (I don't mean that in a bad way)

theres a chap out west auckland called jandals whos a absolute wizard on b/warners unfortunatly i dont have his number but some bound to on here

Knocking usually means something is loose.Did you tighten everything correctly! As for adjustment just put the lever in neutral and do likewise with the selector on the box and hook up the linkage.Thats how I usually do it.

m16d, Dec 3, 8:10am
Did yer put some oil in it.!

nzoomed, Dec 3, 8:46am
yeah thats what we did, the manual suggesteds that too.
Not sure what the knocking is, bit unusual.

has it got a lock-up type torque converter! If so the piston could be jammed in the locked position and not allowing the stator to free wheel thus keeping the trans under load and causing the shifting problems. Has been a while since I have worked on these mind you

nzoomed, Dec 3, 9:54am
no im pretty sure they didnt have those back then!

snoopy221, Dec 3, 12:12pm
L OLOle *jandals*- Yip damn GOOD trans man.
Be Naffed if i'd say LAND CRAB to im PERSOANLLY.
LOL
But yeah either Dave Lawson or his team at east autos- google em- or *jandals* would be Beyond Any Doubt the BEST trans peeps in Godzone.

i did one of the bmc ones 30 odd years ago. easi pizi

nzoomed, Dec 4, 1:00am
We think it may be the clutches that are binding, we have checked the linkage to the valve body and thats all good, the noise we are having may be an unrelated issue.

carclan, Dec 4, 7:31am
Try the flexi plate bolts, It would seem it is in that region.

nzoomed, Dec 4, 7:48am
looked at them yesterday, they were all good.

carclan, Dec 4, 8:25am
What about modulation pressure!

nzoomed, Dec 4, 8:22pm
dont exactly know what you mean by that, the pump appears to be working, or else it wouldnt go into drive, it could be the valve body at fault perhaps!

petermcg, Dec 5, 4:57am
Is there any bands in this transmission, they may be required for reverse and low operation.(Note Bands are usually adjusted in inch pounds not foot pounds!)

nzoomed, Dec 5, 6:04am
the bands are all set and were adjusted by a transmission speciliast before we started the car.

nzoomed, Dec 5, 7:14am
contd.
We believe its in the valve body or a pipe connecting it is crossed over.

supernova2, Dec 5, 7:54am
Doubt its possible to cross connect the valve body.Perhaps ask the specialist who set up the bands for his opinion.

singing1, Dec 5, 8:06am
Is the trans oil pump located properly!

nzoomed, Dec 5, 10:04am
Well thats what i thought, but our contact who does transmissions said there are 2 pipes that can easily be confused for each other and fitted in the wrong way, but i doubt thats the issue, we checked everything according to the manual, but we will double check tomorrow.

nzoomed, Dec 5, 10:07am
it can only go in one place, we did have it machined, as it was quite worn, but i dont think thats the issue, im confident its all working.
