Vehicle felt like it was losing power on highway, and when trying to negotiate our steep driveway definitely didn't want to do it. temperature gauge normal. on opening bonnet met with engine dipstick popped up a couple of centimetres and oil all over that side of motor. appears to have emptied sump. what are opinions on cause and damage? Other question is about getting vehicle to 'doctor' about 25 km away. as it is auto will it need to be trailered or can it be safely towed that distance?

As a general rule Trailered if auto, and since its 4wd really does need all four wheels off the ground. I believe some cars are ok at low speed but with distance you need to go that's not a goer. Bugger.

As above compression from piston is pushing the oil out , leaking head gasket, warped head , cracked head, if its high km and not worth much then look at your options to replace car.
