So it doesn't get a flat battery as easily. The two batteries have more capacity, so they will run accessories for longer. It may have been a camper or a mobile workshop or something like that.

Seams odd.
My Hiace has two battery's.fitted up the same as campers and telecom vans.
Power charging lead from Alt goes to a splitter box and then a lead to each battery.
Having it the way you have would be a waste of time, unless your batterys are stuffed.Unhook 1 and see if van still starts!.

So what you are saying is that both your batteries are also in parallel.!

diesel hiace! my diesel Delica van had two batteries in Parallel. Diesel engines generally need a large amount of power to crank over the engine, and that power is provided by one large heavy duty battery or two smaller batteries.

no they are + to + (12v) not + to - which would make it 24v

I sopose they are in a way, but if lights in van die and tv stops working battery is flat. But std factory battery still starts the engine. engine recharges both.
