Hiace needs 100,000km service

My 05 Hiace turbo diesel auto has turned over 100,000km and needs its major service including timing belt.
I have only changed the oil and all filters regularly since I bought it at 30,000km so I will send it in for the big one.
I will get the coolant changed as well. What else should I be getting done! I have no handbook or service schedule.
Is there any advantage sending it to Toyota rather than the workshop down the road!
For_an_angel or Fish, how long should this service take!
Cheers Stevo

Get injector seals and seats replaced too.

Good time to think about an intake manifold clean (as in a physical clean) and having the garage run some professional intake/injector cleaner through. By professional I mean like the Wynns product where they bypass the fuel intake and run the car on it via an alloy container pressurized with shop air.

mugenb20b, May 25, 7:32am
It's a diesel.

dent, May 25, 7:34am
Maybe gearbox and diff oils wouldnt be a bad idea. Cambelts arnt to bad on those engines.

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 7:35am
Yes. your point being!
Edit. I did say bypass the fuel intake when I should have said fuel line, is that what confused you!

mugenb20b, May 25, 7:40am
How are you going to stop the pump from supplying fuel to the injector (common) rail! From the injector rail (which is under the intake manifold), there's 4 pipes going to the injectors. The fuel return line starts under the rocker cover, how are you meant to block it off! It's made of steel.

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 7:49am
Bugger, I guess they should have thought about that before inventing the machine and selling thousands of them to Garages all over the world. (note to self, sell stock in Wynn's and competing company's tomorrow).

franc123, May 25, 7:50am
I don't think that 1KD engines need timing belts until 150K.

mugenb20b, May 25, 7:51am
Never seen one to tell you the truth.

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 7:52am
Just winding you up mugenb, I just didn't explain it well. I take it you havn't used one of those machines before!
Here's a video of what I think is the flash new machine that Wynn's sells. Generally most Garages have the older kind where you hang the supply bottle from the bonnet and pressurise it with shop air. You should get the idea of how its done from this video though as its essentially works very similarly.

I thought so, not that common in NZ so not your fault, but the Wynn's reps do push them a bit these days. They do work really well and are worth picking up when they come up here on TM for $100 or so as they do now and then.

BTW, I am calling it a Wynn's machine but various manufacturers sell setups that are essentially the same for with their own branded product.

mugenb20b, May 25, 7:59am
Thanks for the video link Jazz. I've seen old petrol injector cleaning machines but not these ones. I'll go and wipe egg off my face now.

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 8:06am
Nah, don't feel bad we all get caught out now and again and I didn't explain it well. Incidentally the more common machines I was thinking of are a setup much like this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fuel-Injector-Canister-type-Cleaner-OTC7448-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c1a8e472cQQitemZ120704616236QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools

Sorry Stevo, I will leave your thread alone now!

stevo2, May 25, 8:08am
Its a 2KD and the sticker on the rocker cover says due at 100,000km.

sunwest, May 25, 8:10am
Stevo, have you had a quote yet! mine is also due for the 100k service, Cheers.

jcwholesale, May 25, 8:12am
While you are doing all of the above LOL. You had better replace the pistons & rings, main & big end bearings, give it a valve grind, oh & replace the diesel filter. Remove the transmission, replace the seals, new converter, & new transmission filter. Remove the diff & replace all bearings.
It is only a Toyota, many vans I have seen with 500000kms on them with just regular oil & filter changes & cambelt changes when required.
The rest is just a way to dispose of money. It is however your money. :-)

stevo2, May 25, 8:16am
No I dont normally get quotes. I just ask for the work to be done, however I am also looking for a good and honest mechanic able to work on diesels and petrol vehicles in Tauranga.
Cheers Stevo

They may do the miles but it dosn't mean its running efficiently. The little bit of money paid getting the intake cleaned out of all the rubbish that gets thrown at it from the EGR is well worth while (assuming here its a similar setup to the other Toyota's with the EGR, havn't played with a 2KD but chances are its the same setup. Likewise getting the injectors cleaned. As for having the cooling system flushed/changed well thats just common sense.

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 8:24am
I can't recommend Brent from "The Garage" (actually called that) in Papamoa enough. He is super honest and absolutely loves his Toyota Diesels.

He is very good price wise too, despite being very experienced and a stickler for doing things properly. Feel free to give him a windup and tell him its a Multipla Diesel you bought on the recommendation of some guy from the internet when you ring him. That always goes down a treat.

mugenb20b, May 25, 8:25am
Yes, but these newer Toyotas are a bit more complex, therefore require a bit more attention.

carmedic, May 25, 8:35am
LoL some of us have been pouring injector cleaner into the new filter for years with the same effect.
???Purging??

thejazzpianoma, May 25, 8:41am
Like anything you can "half ass" it but there are clear and measurable advantages of doing this job properly. Having done this using the proper gear before I can tell you first hand it can make a real difference, and I am not one to endorse junk science. In fairness results will depend of course on the state of the injectors etc before hand as cleaning a system that does not need it will obviously do nothing.
Besides you can pick up a machine for chump change so why not do it properly!

Edit: I would hate to think what they charge for the flash machine in the video, when I say go and grab one I mean the more basic one like in the ebay link which should work just as well.

sr2, May 25, 10:00am
Hi Jazz, (apologies to the Op for a small thread hijack) thought I might grab your expertise while you??

franc123, May 25, 10:30am
I guess there are some people about who want a smooth running vehicle that will last a long time and are willing to pay for it, not all of us want to waste money on a collection of white shoes, hair gel, gold chains and porn magazines do they Mr Car Shark! If you do neglect this stuff you probably will be doing some of the work you suggest, in time.I bet you've never seen an automatic trans in a van do 500K without going bang due to a lack of servicing.
