Running mud tyres at 45psi to get less wear!

samage, Oct 29, 8:42pm
i have 31x10.5x15 mud tyres and am running them at 45psi on the roads to prevent them from wearing down to quickly. do you think this will work or not make a differance! cheers

yea will make a tiny difference, you probable won't notice it, but it will make the rolling resistance less so easier for the motor to pust. my safari has always had 45psi in its tyres, but they are A/T.

i run the tyres on the ol lada @ 50 psi, better fuel econ, easier steering, dont think they wear much differently, rougher ride .

Some tyres (Maxxis!) have harder compound in the centre and softer mud lugs outside for exactly that reason.

If you want excellent road life have a look at Cooper mud Tyres.

All you will do is wear the centres out of them.

I run 35psi in my 35" KL71's and the center is wearing out quicker than the out side.

IV'E BEEN RUNNING 50 PSI FOR YEARS AND I AINT WORN NO MIDDLES OUTA MINE.

50 psi! You're an idiot, and you don't have to shout! I have been running 36 psi in my Terrano, and they have had excessive wear down the middle of the tread (A/T tyres).

i run mid 30's in all the cars i drive - never seen centres wear out. more like shoulders on the front go first.

Running 31/10.5/15 AT's sitting on 38psi all round on my 88 Surf
Still running the same marginal tyres on it that I put on over 2 years ago & they are still about the same tread.
Did notice tho, that if I put them down to 36psi. they start chewing the shoulders

i seem to have trouble pumping my tyres up at the gas station they dont want to go more than 32ish. I have 33x13.5 maxxis mudzillas on 15x10 rims. 1984 60 serries land cruiser maybe its just me !

i was once told that the cause of the middle of the tread wearing out was caused by under inflation. the tyres flex more at higher speeds causing more wear in the middle.

mrfxit, Oct 31, 10:14am
Other way around
Over inflated forces the tyre to ride on the center
Under inflated forces the center to fold in a curve inwards & the tyre ride on the shoulders

Correct

I have 31" LT radials, have tried 40+ psi, but it's just too bloody hard, 36 when the misus in for a long trip or 38 me just going to work.

Personally I reckon rotation every 5k and alignments (keeping a minimum of 36psi) are more important than just pressures alone.

What tyres are ya running!

cleaver idiot thank you,Ahhh the irony of that statement!
