Not so much for long-distance very fast trips though.

trogedon, Nov 16, 7:46am
All our fastest speeds come from a standing start!

iceman10, Nov 16, 9:56am
140mph. LA Freeway, interstate 5 if I recall. Around 1978 in a '59 Ferrari 410 Superamerica. My old man was friend's with a fellow who owned what was the Kona Kai motel, just off one of the corners of the Disneyland carpark. May not have been the fastest speed here, but what an amazing car. Still have great memories 30 years later.

My scariest was 255K (on the Terratrip) on a Targa special stage in the COSEVO shortly before they bought in the 200K speed limit. It was a typical back country Targa stage with a curved crown, lot??

In NZ!

pge, Nov 16, 10:06pm
I remember them in Chch, early '60's.

At the same time, they also had FIAT 1500cc Crusader.

One of the lads in the dealership that serviced them got a ticket, as they went in for servicing, they were surreptitiously fitted with intake restrictors - never performed as well, after that.

but in 440 yards!

smac, Nov 17, 12:30am
Huh, OK. Thought only the aussies had them (cause they were the quickest thing on the road at the time).

100mph up the Kilmog hill outa Dunedin (in passing lane of course) back in the 80's , in mates Valiant Pacer with e49 Charger specced motor and 6 people on board!Told mate he could tow my hotted up mk2 cortina faster up the hill than I could drive it!

dave653, Nov 17, 9:42am
Das was a civil defence cop, early 80's, Commodore. Whg to Waipu, bout 35km. 12 minutes.
My lil old 179, still going at 180kmh.

asa50, Nov 17, 9:56am
Cruised 160-180kmh on a trip, kids in the back asleep, nothing special just with the general flow of the traffic at the time.
In a country that does not consider you to baby puppy eater if you exceed 120 (there you will actually get abused for doing less)

Not a shit show, I drove my V6 VP at 150 the other night and it was SUPER unstable and rides on 15x7 with 225/60 Bridgstones

mustang-man, Nov 22, 5:06am
DRIVING: 180km/h in an R32 Skyline GTS-4
PASSENGER: 280 km/h in an 600hp+ R33 Skyline GT-R (which was later rolled/totalled during a hillclimb event).

GT-R had really hard suspension, so over 220km/h i was literally bouncing right off my seat (seatbelt stopped me going too high!). Was kinda fun, but kinda scary at the same time. :D
That car was mental, i got to drive it later but the fastest i went was flooring it in 3rd while passing a car (got squashed back in the seat - was awesome!).

The driver of the car i passed perhaps didn't like it though, as after i pulled in they turned on their high beams (in broad daylight.).

the faster you go the bigger the mess

Highlights of my life:

1) 197 km/h at 3am in the winter of '93 on the Waipu straight (Northland) in a stock standard but almost new 1993 1600cc DOHC 16V Corolla - just couldn't get those last 3 km/h out of her. only saw one other car in 30kms- thankfully not a white Commodore.

2)Doing the ton (100mph/160kp/h) UP, yes UUUP, the Bombays following a 5700cc V8 HSV with a driver with a very perplexed look on his face - he couldn't work out how I was keeping with him since I was in a car with "only' a 3 cylinder 1000cc engine.

Oh, it was a chipped, big bore, k&n DOHC turbo intercooled 3 cylinder 1000cc engine - the mighty King-killer Daihatsu Charade GTti.

3)120 km/h down the back straight at Pukekohe raceway- yes, only 120 km/h - but it was on a tiny 80cc Yamaha YSR racing scooter - that thing was SCREAMIN'. lol.

Good times.

DISCLAMER: If any police Officers are reading this - I made all of the above up.Especially the bit about the horse. :P

OMG where is Male Timaru he is THE MAN remember when he came over the auck harbour bridge at an estimated 300kmh in a tredia or was it a cordia! LEGEND

friendly_prawn, Nov 22, 9:39am
sounds like you owned a standard old pos.
Mine wasnt. It had a fortune spent on it.

mram, Nov 22, 10:00am
My old standard stroke 308 v8 VL used to do 150mph (240kph) easy enough, 3.08 ratio and traumatic transmission and a nice bumpy csl cam. It used to start picking up the front end thou. scary

jenny188, Nov 22, 8:27pm
all you guys with big engines or turbos haha try 200km in a Nissan bluebird(sr18de factory detune for economy) in 4th gear still with 5th to go

my mates vr4 hits his cut out at 240km as confirmed by a gps
and can you really count v8 supers on a track!

kiwicon, Nov 22, 9:06pm
funny that your bluebird cuts out at 188. did you fred flintstone the last 12 ks out of it.

jenny188, Nov 23, 2:37am
sorry no cutout N.Z new.

friendly_prawn, Nov 23, 3:08am
I once went 180kph sideways over the habour bridge in third gear in my honda 1500 vtec with auto trans. . :-)

rednsr, Nov 23, 3:41am
Vr4's cut out at 180km/h unless modified. And at that point the specific nature of the gearing in that car to cause that specific speed suggest you are lying.

Anyway. just over 250kp/h in a rover 220 turbo down branxholme road in southland. the wind noise from the targa top was biblical.

rednsr, Nov 23, 3:43am
I went 1,000,000.kp/h upside down thru the victoria park tunnel right now in a citron 2cv.
