own 96 mazda bounty d/cab diesel 2.5 rego $596.67 for 1 yr, mate owns 96 terrano diesel wagon 2.5 rego $441.00 for 1 yr, only differance on renewal notice is my acc levy is $467.oo and his is $311.oo,anyone know why such a big diff with acc levy,both regd as private passenger,

Commercial vehicle vs. private passenger (ute/van vs s/w) regardless of how they are registered. It's absolute BS I know, but that's how it is. I do less than 5000 kms a year, so I decided to buy a petrol ute and stick it on B class rego ($57 a year), as it's mainly used on a rural property and driven locally.

NZTA/Govt have decided that vehicles that have a tray on the back have more accidents and should pay more, I've got a Falcon S/W and an older model Falcon ute and the ute costs about $50 more P/A.
