Good idea re the plate. Hopefully its at school on Monday. Re the $1400 - it's basically just pads/rotors.

I replaced all the rotors and pads on my E36 320i for around $600, that was a 1997, but the newer ones are similar.

They're a damned good car. Powerful brakes, and suggest that only OE, or OEM, rotors and pads be used as aftermarket ones don't seem to last as long on them.
