Is the thermostat working! Put it in a pot of water and heat it on the stove to make sure it's opening.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:39am
huh!radiators been cleaned and poked out :)

rob_man, Sep 12, 5:39am
Ignore my last post then.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:41am
so is it ok to put thermostat back in now!

intrade, Sep 12, 5:42am
wont matter if its working or not if radiator is blocked then therestriction from thermostat will make it overheat .
You remove the radiator and get it checked by radiator specialist . I usually dont even bother andfit new radiator as its a waste of time to repair old radiators.
silverdale radiator or A1 are cheapest for new ones. 300 to 600$ however at aguess

intrade, Sep 12, 5:45am
Do this test when the therostat is not fitted run it warm and see if it goes to normal operation temperature.
It should not and if it doescheck with hand the core all along radiator must be the same hot .
coldspotswould indicate airlocks or core blockeging of the radiator . thus reduces cooling capacity.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:45am
got another radiator that is pretty near perfect. and was done properly from a radiator specialist. the original one was corroded.
the van it came out of was crashed into.i think the only other thing the guys keep talking about is the fan working or not. honestly there has been 3 deisel mechanics who have 3 opinions.and yes, has been process of elimination / mis diagnosis. should've started with the radiators.

next time the head is screwed down make sure the head bolt threadsand head bolt washers, are oiledbefore installing bolts, to obtain correct gasket compression

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:50am
got hubby to read this and he said the the temp guage when 1/2 way up between bottom and normal. so is this ok! he is going to feel the radiator now. but he has put the thermostat back in. so should he take it out now!he grumpy that i told him to put it back in, and now does he have to take it out!:)

intrade, Sep 12, 5:50am
WHAT Van! make model year and engine!
also if all is ok and the electric fan wont work then it will overheat also.
I just done a mazda 323 with blowen radiator due to no fan working.
I wired it up to the thermal switch on radiator but dont works well the sender from wracker seems faulty also. so i will likely fit him a other sender unit that i got from supersheep auto to make the fan work.
its a longer storyhe also has a manual start button on it as there is more electrical problems.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:51am
thanks, yes this has been done. and new bolts every 2nd time blown.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:53am
viscous fan.td27 nissan homy 1995 gt cruise diesel auto

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 5:58am
ok, right now, hubby is confused.he not happy with me.when he drove it the water level went down (no thermostat in it). and he stopped and topped up twice.so has this got the air bubbles out . does he keep the thermostat in NOW and turn it back on for 1/2 hour! idling!

intrade, Sep 12, 6:02am
keep as is and idle and check if radiator gets even hot if coldspots turn off and remove radiatoras it be blocked. also pump the hoses to movepotential airlocks and switch heater on hot so it cab circulate the water everywhere.
if all ok you check if the viscous fan kicks in should start sounding like a turbine when it locks to spinn the fan. andwotch the hands while engine isgoing.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:05am
just checking.he keeps the thermostat IN!

intrade, Sep 12, 6:07am
yes keep it in. to see whats going to happen. as above

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:09am
thankyou, he was about to drive down the road!i had to yell out the window.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:13am
lol. marc is a deisel mechanic as welllolbut he is so stressed with this van. 4 weeks later and still not going. that i think his mind has warped. doesn't help with me asking others opinions :)but you have been very helpful:)

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:19am
he did this, and seems ok. didn't heat up. so now he says he is going to drain the water and put antifreeze in and idle it for half hour.he is biting at the bit to get it going .

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:29am
now, he wants to know if he keeps the radiator cap ON or OFF for idling 1/2 hrplease.

he has put the antifreeze in now.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:30am
or. does he take it for a drive so it warms up!.

he wants to know this. not me :)

intrade, Sep 12, 6:32am
ummmm if you drive you fit the thermostat or the water will overflow everywhere. andalso fill up the expansion bowl.

noddybabe1, Sep 12, 6:44am
ahhh, just found out that today when another deisel mechanic was here, that the 2nd and 3rd bolt needed retorquing.marc had not been retorquing them in the past 5 head gaskets!he not happy with himself.lessons learnt the hard and expensive way!

intrade, Sep 12, 6:48am
ummmm you do what is written on the headgasket backingusually said how to torque and what order .never heard of torqing 2nd and 3th bolt again . . tightening them in a wrong order can distort the gasket. i think you man 3 stages as per this
Basically tighten all the bolts from the middle of the block working your way out.

1st - 39-44 nm
2nd - 54-59 nm
3rd - turn exhaust side cylinder head bolts 90 degrees clockwise
This is from a nissan terrano forum with td27
http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/17488/Nissan_Terrano_TD27_head_bolts_torque_setting.aspx

You just have to do what the head gasket instruction say and there would have been no problems.

If you've planed the head a few times, make sure when you torque it down, you've got enough thread left on the studs.
Might pay to put a couple of washers on so you know your pulling the head down and not just tightening up against the end of the thread.
