Gas shock absorbers - are mine knackered!

Pulled leaf spring & an old Munroe gas shock off vehicle today. I was surprised to find I could compress the shock absorber by pushing on one end, without too much effort. Is this supposed to be, is it the nature of a gas shock or is it knackered!

Depends on the vehicle, some cars have stiffer shocks then others. Best way to test is with it back on the vehicle and do a Bounce Check on it.

if its already off, and old, why not just replace them anyway!

Because I'm not made of money.

Can you pull it back out again fast though! Its not really about pressure its about speed and its the return stroke that counts.

I'll give that a try tomorrow. Many thanks.

if you have them off just compress the shaft into the body and let go. if the shaft returns to open on its own then there is still gas pressure. this does not mean that the shock valves are functioning. Bill
