V6 ones go very well, I drove an '04 model today, with the highest spec trim, leather seats, sunroof, etc. Very nice.

Yes it seems anything with a bit of room in it and made this century is priced around the 10k mark

thejazzpianoma, Dec 14, 8:46am
4 Cylinder isn't much better. You are looking at around 10.5l/100km for general running around, thats a lot for a modern car.

mugenb20b, Dec 14, 8:46am
They use about as much as a '96 model, 6 cylinder Falcon (I'm told).

mugenb20b, Dec 14, 8:47am
More like 12l/100km.

27pukeko, Dec 14, 8:47am
I imagine that is a lot!

When I lived in the UK the golfs were very popular. but are they prone to random problems with the electrics/computer etc!

thejazzpianoma, Dec 14, 9:18am
Some of the late 90's ones had the odd problem. The last of the Mk4's like that should be well sorted though. You can get a really top example in your price range too which would help.
Also, the problems are generally well known now too andare not usually end of the world price wise to fix. so long as you are sensible about where you take it for repair. (asking on here is always good if you get stuck)

The likes of the 2.0 engine is a very reliable and straight foward unit too which helps with reliability and servicing too.

Brent from "The garage" at Papamoa is very reasonable for pre-purchase checks and has the computer interface to scan these and give you a heads up if there are any problems lurking. Tell him Alex sent you, he will likely mutter something about how you really need a Toyota and how anything European is a tool of the devil, but none the less he does excellent work on VW's and has all the gear.
