theguitarmaster, Jan 15, 12:34am
i recently got back upright, i have bought a 1200 fj yamaha, i would like to get a full service, this is my first hydrolic clutch and brake bike etc. how much should i pay,and what should i expect to be done as part of a typical service these days. im considering trever pierce on ferry road

Don't ask for a 'service'. Get specific.

As this vehicle is an unknown quantity at the minimum you want a oil & filter change, check & adjust valve clearances, carburettor balance, check air filter & spark plugs.

Going beyond that you'll want the brake & clutch fluids changed, brake calipers removed, inspected & the slides lubricated (if they're not a fixed caliper - I can't remember on those) and changing fork oil.

It gets expensive if you can't do it yourself and doing it yourself is half the fun.

i have recently started doing oil changes myself, super duper easy to do, cheaper and also you know that the oil you put in is the good stuff. But the rest of the stuff i get done by a mechanic haha

Go and see duane at Duane's Bikes & Skis, very good to deal with and have a talk with him re servicing, he is really good.

TGM-- Great news for ya.--With the FJ1200 once its run inyou will find this first service -if you do what tony suggests will BY FAR be the most expensive you will do.
The engines go a long time with no shim adjustments needed.
The FJ had about 6 generations -from the first red/white 16 inch wheel version through to the abs braked 17 inch version.
The earliest version had the same brakes as the XJ900 which were great for hauling up a 75 hp bike -not so good for hauling up a 100plus HP bike if things had started to wear.
The Usual issues are gummed up pistonsand worn pad mounting pins/slides-they get deep groovs in them and the pads hook up.
$20.00 a pin and problem solved.
They are quite hard on chains so I'd be making sure its not worn out.
I've always had a soft spot for the fj
