I note many of the 316s advertised are 1800cc. So what does the 316 or 318 model number refer to!

'3' is for '3 series' 16=1600, 18=1800 'i' is for 'inline'

I am no BMW Guru but I am pretty sure the "i" is for injected not "inline". Also the last two didgets don't really correlate exactly to the engine size any more. There are 318i 2.0L engined cars etc.

yeah the last two numbers aren't the engine's exact displacement, ie there are 520's which are 2.2L or 535s which are 3.4L, 318s which are 1.9L or 2.0L.
i is for injected, the V6, V8, V10 and V12 models still carry the i designation.

With the E46 models, 316 could mean 1796cc or 1895cc!
