first thingyou look at the name of the car,,,,,,,,
if its got toyota corona corolla or similar written on it then its a good start.
then you fire it up and pull the dipstick of the auto trans and mesure the fluid level while it runs . you also inspect the colour of the auto trans.fluid
nice red like redwine colour means its just been serviced or has been looked after. the more it goes to brown black the less likely it was looked after.
if its dark brown or black and has mitsubishi written on the car you shut the bonnetand runnnn.

now providedyou did not need to runnn like niceredfresh fluid , you jump in the carandflick it in reverseand see how long it takes till it moves best when all is coldthen you go for a drive in D and see if it shifts ok no jerkingor bumping shift . you then floor it once its warmed up and it is in a highergear to see if it kicks down 1 gear ok , then you see if the overdrive button on gearleaver works if it has one . depending on what automatic may have a gear lock button to check as well.
if you are then want a better check you would want a trusted mechanic to check the whole car over.

Really a job for expert to check. Good advice above. Let us know the car and mileage. Go for a drive and note the gear changes. Should happen when you expect, not be jerky or too harsh. Try on a hill and try and note if it is slipping. Also try backing up a steep hill. Look underneath for signs of leaks. Most modern cars have lockup Torque Convertor. Take up to highway speeds and check that is locking up, and that it staying engaged like it is supposed to do.
Professionals can do more checks, doing pressure checks etc.
