I've got a xd falcon with a 302 Cleveland but at a100 ks it's screaming for another gear diff is a 2.92 any ideas way to check now. Thanks

jmma, Jan 24, 2:43am
Auto or manual!

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 2:44am
Auto

rocky0169, Jan 24, 2:48am
Sure its 2.92! Not 3.9!

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 2:49am
Yip checked tag on diff and then took plate off and checked the stamp on cog and counted teeth

jmma, Jan 24, 2:50am
XAV8 auto had a 2.77 diff, be hard to find I guess
BTW what wheel and tyre size are on it!

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 2:52am
15 inch and eagers

fordkiwi27, Jan 24, 2:52am
shouldnt be screaming with those gears in it

thunderbolt, Jan 24, 2:52am
Does not make much sense, unless it has 10 in rims.

I purchased a 63 compact a few years ago, which had two diff ratio replacements before I brought it, chasing a lower crusing RPM.

Flicking the 4-6-8 switch on the aftermarket rev counter fto the 8 position soon fixed the problem.

I've been thinking my speedo is out and going faster than I thought if you get eat I mean

skin1235, Jan 24, 2:59am
so if its screaming perhaps you need to check if it is actually in top gear cos it sounds like it has not changed out of 2nd
how
stop, select L, drive off, select 2,etc, make sure you can feel it change up each time, at 100 km there would be stuff all engine braking when you button off ( with that diff ratio there;d be virtually none until you were doing 120 plus and harsh decelleration at that

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 3:04am
Ok I'll try that but took it out tonight and went threw all gears so think its changeing fine

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:05am
thats a poss, diff head changed but speedo drive not, get a mate to mark out 2km, drive it at 60km, should be 2 mins for 2km, then drive it back at 100, should be 1min 12 secs for the 2km at 100km/hr
post back the times, that will tell you if the speedo is completely out of wach or within quooee

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 3:07am
I rekon it my be the speedo drive giving false reading coz wasn't changed when conversation done does that make sence

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:07am
a 2.9 is long legs, unless the trans is on it's way out you should be cruising at less than 2200 rpm at 100km hr

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:09am
lets call it a conversion, although we could have a conversation about it lol
thats not a dig at you, I have words that refuse to come out right too

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 3:11am
Lol sorry doin this off an iPod small screen and old eyes lol

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:15am
and yeah, you haven't told us what conversion was done, so assume it was the engine.
and the engine doesn't alter gearing
to make it re higher as you say in your first post you'd have to change rims and or diffhead, or possible gear clusters

a note : that 2.9 would go REAL well if it was behind a manual box, especially with 15 inch rims - clip on a set of235 /75/15 tyres and stall it every time you select top at under 85km hr

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 3:22am
Yes just engine so I'm buggerd if I know now I'll fOllow a mate tomorrow at a 100ks and see if we are close or chase a copper and get him to clock me lolol

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:23am
okay,

is it screaming ( you can actually hear it or feel it ) or is the rev counter saying its reving too high

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:25am
take your foot off the pedal at 100km, does it slow down real quick! cos if it is reving it will slow down like you've just pulled a handbrake

a 302 cleve will near lock the rears under engine braking

shopaholic3, Jan 24, 3:25am
Have no rev counter just feels it wants another gear

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:29am
not silly though, if it has wof and rego approach one, he'll quite possible be happy to clock you on the 'hawk'

skin1235, Jan 24, 3:34am
top gear was vacumm operated I think, if you have a hose wrong you wont find top

try it at 80-85 pull it back a gear - you should feel it change down, then pull it back another when you get to 60 - if you can't check them going up check them coming down

xpfairmont, Jan 24, 5:40pm
I reckon your wheels are to small, or the vacuum from manifold to the back of the trans has come out/not working - so not getting top gear, or the Torque converter is wrong or faulty - does the engine get very hot!
