Depends on what you mean by best.

Personally I'd choose an E46 330i

rovercitroen, Jun 23, 7:54am
Well, in brief. The E46 3 series was a very good car. They ran from about 1998 to 2003 and have sedan, coupe or wagon (Touring) options. There is a range of engines to choose from too - power and / or economy for everyones preference.
In the 5 series the E39 was very good. They ran from 1996 to 2003. As with the 3 series there is a choice of engines including good diesels. Very good cars and a real bargain nowadays in this country. BMWs generally don't need to be expensive to maintain as there are many sources of parts and service due to the sheer numbers on the roads.

BMW Very good

Oh, and the E38 7 series BMW is a lovely luxury car, especially in 4.4 litre V8 form. These are probably the bargain of the BMW cars now, if you get a good one, and they were made from about 1994 to 2001 i think. I had a 1995 740i which was a lovely car. It was $6000 but had been over $200,000 new! And driving it you could feel why.

I bought an E46 Wagon for the wife yesterday, wasnt looking forward to replacing the clutch on the GTB so this seemed easier for my 'free time' lol

So far very nice & feels like its on the road not floating around ontop of it

supertech1, Jun 23, 8:16am
Nothing like a 760 V12

E39 M5 manual V8 godness, fairly open ended question I love my E39, plenty of expertise around now, and motors are the same in 3 and 5 series in the 46 and 39's on a few occassions as well.

E39 or E46 with 6 cylinder 2.5 or3.0

doug207, Jun 23, 10:58am
It's probably a 4.4.E38 wasn't available with the M60B40.

I've had a few BMWs, all have been great cars. My family has run a few of them too and they have all been great cars and we've done some pretty high mileages in them. On the other hand, some particular models are absolute junk.

budgel, Jun 23, 12:16pm
The 4.4 engine came in around 1996 I think. When was the first E38!

budgel, Jun 23, 12:19pm
I have an E34 and will certainly be getting another BMW when I upgrade soon.

I enjoy driving it every time I use it.

fiatracer, Jun 23, 8:09pm
E38s were 4 litre, later ones were 4.4. I should know, I too have owned one of the cars discussed upthread. Rovercitroen burgled it off me.

ringo2, Jun 24, 12:37am
No,buy a Fiat Punto far better.

doug207, Jun 24, 12:40am
My mistake, I have been mislead
Interesting though that I have never come across one in 4L guise. Mind you, E38s are not my thing.

ringo2, Jun 24, 1:05am
Only one E38 worth buying.IF you can find one.http://en.wikipedia.org/w-

I have an E46 330i. It is a brilliant car in all aspects. Services can be costly, but no more than most cars would cost. For a grunty 3.0l engine it is very economical and comfort is second to none. By far one of the better looking 3-series ever produced IMO. I'm not advertising, but have mine up for grabs currently.

jason_247, Jun 25, 10:47am
ive got an e38
selling it now sadly
def a 4.0
best value car ive ever had
huge performance
but none of the boy racer stigma from insurance of other people

bmwnz, Jun 25, 1:09pm
I've had 4 BMWs. The 330i was the rocket, but for my money, the E39 528iSE was the nicest drive of them all.

budgel, Jun 25, 11:25pm
That is interesting, I have a mate that says the same thing about the 528.

bmwnz, Jun 25, 11:27pm
Oh well, with two of us saying that, it must be right! LOL

doug207, Jun 26, 12:12am
The E39 are a beautiful car if it's a 528i and upwards. Possibly my favourite all round BMW to be fair. You could do 500km and barely know you've done it, in any weather at any time.
I need one.

One of the most practicable and best cars of all time.
