I remember looking at a website that gave an understanding of wheel alignment issues by feeling the tread on the front tyres.
When I run my hand over the front tyres on my BMW 520i the treads feather towards the front with no uneven wear showing.

To clarify, when I run my hands forward on the tyres, it feels smooth. When I run my hands rearwards, I can feel the front edges of the tread sticking out a bit.

Any ideas! or websites that explain it!

if your car drive off to the left/right when you take you hand of the steering wheel.its time for one.

What do you mean I just confused myself! If you have nothing constructive to add, dont reply!

It;s called feathering and some tyre designs are prome to a little bit of it even with near perfect alignment,I know as I used to do alignments.

The tyres are wearing abnormally. You definately require a wheel alignment but the wear could be caused from a suspension part being worn. Take the vehicle to someone that will check the suspension correctly or a wheel alignment specialist, one that will check the suspension before doing a wheel alignment. Some tyre shops do not know much about wheel alignments or maybe not knowing how to inspect the suspension correctly. No point doing a wheel alignment if the suspension is worn. Some BMW's do give suspension problems with ball joints and suspension bushes so my advice is to get it looked at ASAP as the tyres should not wear uneven. I am guessing you have standard suspension and wheels fitted!

Thanks for your reply monzaman, I guess we amateurs that dont have alignment machinery at our disposal have to work by rules of thumb.

So I shouldnt worry about it too much!

Just get your wheels aligned.Measuring them is the only way you will know, and the only other way to find out is to wear through your tyres and cost you unnecessary expense.

terckon is also correct regarding ball joints and esp rear lower bearing bushes,I've replaced them on E39s,whats your model!
