Dad had a 1600cc Cortina with CNG, it was actually his company car which he bought cheaply. Gutless but economical .

Mum had an Allegro which she really liked.

The poor souls didnt Know any better.

My old man had a real bad run in the early 80's traded his 81 accord in for a 82 suzuki carry - to light for 3 kids etc, traded that for a series 1 Jag that had been lowered on tridents and scrapped the guards real bad, traded that onto a 83 SD1 rover that someone outside the pub put bananas up the exhaust and buggered the engine.

Shank's Pony - neither parent ever drove.

i dont think my parents had a bad car when i was growing up. couple 60 chevs, thunderbird, firebird, karmann ghia and all sorts of other stuff i think are pretty cool even now

gooddealz2, Jun 2, 9:27pm
My parents only had 3 cars since we arrived here.Humber 90,AP5 Valiant and a 1964 Humber Super Snipe.None of them were bad in anyway.I see one guy here hated his parents Super Snipe but I'm a huge fan. Each to his own I guess. That Microcar Museum link is fascinating too.

Austin Princess. followed by Austin Princess.

Triumph 2000. I never understood as a child/teenager why my dad loved his noisy, sluggish old English car so much.

(Then I grew up, and started driving a lot of new and supposedly "better" cars, and discovered how boring they are, and suddenly I got it. Playing an old piano is much more fun than operating a brand new washing machine. )

yep my parents had some good cars, new HT Holden ute,new Anglia.2 cars in my memory of apprenticeship with Ford, a customer brought an XY 351 GT Shaker, with the cool rattling scoop,Zircon green i think and another guy imported a new mK 2 1600e Cortina from England.both beautiful cars to drive.

Bambina confusion I suspect. In another life, we bought my (now) wife a 'D' Bambina to go to Training College. The perfect car for her at that time. She drove it everywhere, and her heart still melts when she sees a real Bambina.A Fiat gem.

The worst I remember from a child was the VW, then they got a PB Vauxhall, then the HR s/w, then we ventured to a 2 car family "WHOAA". mum had a Morris 1100 & dad bought an HK Premier with factory chev 307.
When he bought the 2nd farm we had to downsize, back to a Hillman Hunter for a while. After a couple of years he bought an HJ Statesman & mum got an LJ Torana. The Torana got written off by the milktanker so she bought an LX Torana. Then they bought my older sisters an Anglia for their first car.
Ahhhhhhhh the good old days.

A Hudson Terraplane, great big stalk mounted head lights on the guards and running boards, probably an late 40s model in early 70s. Our first car, very hard to start, still had to hand crank it sometimes. Didnt last long and ended up on the back lawn as a 'club house'. Dont know what became of it. Bet some one would love to have it as a project now.

dx corolla, rusted so bad if it got sandblasted there wouldnt of been enough metal to make a baked bean tin.

fordcrzy, Jun 3, 3:03am

1948 Prefect, carried 5 kids and 2 adults. The worst moment was when its headlights failed alongside the Waikato River, plunged into blackness, lucky we didn't end up in the water, I thought my mum was going to have a heart attack. A good samaritan stopped, towed us to the nearest town, showing the real Kiwi spirit of kindness. The 1968 Cortina that replaced it was light years ahead of the Prefect, we never looked back after that.

The next car Dad bought was one of these:

http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/car_info_citroen_traction_avant.htm

Now that was cool with the long flowing guards, but it gutless, it hated hills.

zephyrheaven, Jun 3, 3:19am
Lancia ; tried to kill us, import - car dealer had bogged up rust around rear suspension which tore off coming around a bend near 5 rivers - crossed centreline went thru a fence & missed a powerpole plus a B train - wouldnt touch any Lancia to this date

Mum and Dad had a few oddities but they were always looked after well as Dads a mechanic and a fussy one at that. Things like the Singer Vogue, Austin van and Humber Super Snipe come to mind but the worst on was the Mazda B1600 ute reason being it was only a two seater. Mum and Dad sat inside in the warm and dry and my brother and I travelled everywhere sitting on the back, rain hail or shine.

1.9l Starfire powered UC Holden Sunbird. Proabably the most over bodied, underpowered car known to man.

glennalan, Jun 3, 3:38am
My parents too, door handle fell off 1st day brand new, then slowly but surely everything else followed.

darkmyst, Jun 3, 3:59am
definitely the morris marina wagon, got dropped off to the school disco in it embarrassed as! drove like sh*t too and it was 80 different colours of primer

pollymay, Jun 3, 4:02am
A subaru leone station wagon, horrid car that stalled if you turned on the AC, chewed gas, smoked and rusted.

Toyota corolla late 70's or early 80's can't remember, right back when Toyota had that problem with the rust treatment and they had to recall thousands of them. Due to not washing off the oily coating I believe at the factory to paint properly. The rust holes in that thing was scary for such a young car at the time, on one door I remember been able to put your arm through it almost under the guard.
