A 91 could be either an E30 or E36. Either way it is likely to have an M40 cambelt engine.If it's an E36 there is a small possibility it has the newer M43 engine which is chain driven.
The transmission mode problem could be a few things, start with removing and cleaning the switch maybe.
and enter in the last 7 digits of the VIN (can be got from carjam if needed)
