by the time you stuff around with it you may as well just buy a new headunit and 1 din fill tray.

Agreed.
The standard Subaru CD players are, in a word - Rubbish. Subaru are not known for bulding anything reliable, and the F3 message is due to either a/ the main bearing becoming worn so that the disc effectively "wobbles" and the laser cannot keep track, or b/ the laser being filled with dust, which is almost impossible to clean properly, or c/ the laser is burning out, so the data is not being read/captured.
Buy a new head unit.
It will be the much cheaper option in the long run.
