are they as bad as the mechanics i have spoken to !, was told that they are bad upto 2003 when nissan sorted most of the gremlins out of them, this one is in a 2000 primers SR20 eith the tiptronic 6 speed, 1 trans guy i spoke to says they were his bread and butter early on and cost around 4500 to rebuild

Yes, lack of maintenance, incorrect oil and owner ignorance will kill a CVT.

fixed

Its been common knowledge that people do love to bag em. Hey like everything with lack of maintenance they can cause trouble. But what trans/engine doesnt if you dont maintain it! Make sure when you drive it it drives smoothly and doesnt make any noises. Gear changes are seamless and you wont feel it. We have one as a run about a 98 has nearly 250kms and trans has not been replaced or fixed. We just made sure it was serviced properly. We rang the guys from cvt.co.nz and rang a tech expert from Nissan hamilton about cvt as they specialise in them and he said they were very reliable and gave trouble with the wrong oil put in them or drivers never servicing them. There are so many primeras on the road they cant be all bad. Ages ago when we bought one I heard all the talk hey mates brothers mum had one bro blew up straight away etc etc. The fact they use to be his bread and butter also tends to believe when they first started getting imported they became a problem but he obviously doesnt see them that often now. Also oil use to be called liquid gold because it was so expensive. Now days they have a generic cvt oil that is cheap and non costly to replace and the servicing is every 60kms. I tend to believe if you have got a good one thats been looked after you will have no probs. Most cars now days have cvt in them too.

What is the kms on this cvt and has it had a service!

miniclubmangt, May 5, 3:37pm
Sorry now i look like im going on about them but on cvt website it says "We will fit complete overhauled CVT transmissions for most common vehicles for less than NZ $3500 GST incl." Thats 1k under what the other guy said and they pick up and deliver for free.

Also the trans under website that primera uses it say
JF06A & JF06V*
High degree of reliability and proven market records
Superb package flexibility.

sorry now I am going on.

"Is a CVT transmission reliable!
Yes, it is very reliable and I believe it will be the transmission of the future.

More and more Car manufacturers are using it in their new vehicles and in the next 5 yearsyou will see many more makes and models with a CVT transmission fitted. You also will see them more in 4WD vehicles.

CVT Transmissions have had a bad reputation in the past. The horror stories develop when CVT transmissions start playing up and sometimes even lose drive completely. The cause of these problems often arose in vehicles that were imported from Japan and sold in New Zealand.Workshops in New Zealand started servicing these cars without realising they were fitted with CVT??

Really!

miniclubmangt, May 5, 4:10pm
Oh k sorry that was a bit of a generalisation. I should say alot of cars can come with cvt in them. As well as the normal autos.

shuddupowh, May 5, 4:40pm
Thread jacking for a second, but how hard is it to convert a CVT to a normal auto! My mrs has a CVT P11 and I want to change it to normal auto. Do the '98 P11 Camino Primeras come out in normal autos or no luck!

miniclubmangt, May 5, 5:03pm
Wouldnt be worth hassle. Just sell and buy a normal auto one. Or convert to manual. you would have to alter loom and swap ecu I think.

graham32, May 5, 5:04pm
One i am looking at has 147km on clock not sure on service history

miniclubmangt, May 5, 5:15pm
Ibwould ask about service history. Why he selling. See if he is genuine or not . Yoi can pretty much tell from a good test drive make sure no clunks and check it shifts through 6 speed gears properly. Have you driven one before! They very smooth.
They rev high and constantly gain speed when doot floored. You dont feel the shifts and revs wont change with each shift like normail autos, took me a week to get use to it I was always waiting fo it to shift. Bloody nice to drive I reckon

My Mitsubishi C V T car has now been driven a normal round town car for 115,000 k;s. Had it serviced at Mitsubishi dealer cost was a bit high, but a very smooth transmission. !500 cc,s engine plenty of get up and go.

As a car dealer, I have a policy of not dealing in CVT transmissions,, diesels, turbos or any european cars. As a consequence of this policy, I get problems/come backswith about 1 car per 100.
