Audi A6 1.8T Manual?

thejazzpianoma, Apr 15, 7:11am
Well that model A6 is a real cracker, miles ahead of the competition at the time and a real personal favourite.
The 1.8T engine is also a real cracker, I haven't driven the 1.8T in the A6 body before and it is quite a big car. The 1.8T does pack a real punch but it might pay to give it a drive to see how that engine pairs to that body with regard to torque etc.
Price wise that is pretty good, no complaints for that money and having driven other manuals of the era I would say the box will be a very nice unit.

Those engines don't mind the km's getting up there and the rest of the body should be holding up well if it has been looked after. Only thing of note is that if the original turbo is untouched it may need attention soon at those km's. Not a big deal but something to note.

The cambelts on those are easy to do, remember to consider age as well as km's in determining if it needs doing. Make sure the original plastic water impellor water pump has been changed out for a steel one or do it immediatly even if the cambelt is not due.

If you are doing a cambelt then do tensioners and waterpump as part of the course.

Other than that, just make sure the air conditioning is working and use it regularly to keep everything tip top.

Check it out like you would any other car and it should be a good bet. In fact a nicely spotted bargain. If I was after a nice wagon in the price range I would be on to that in a flash.

If you get it I would be keen to hear how the power/economy is. Potentially it should be very forgiving for such a big car when being hacked around.

If its any help I have bought from that dealer that has that wagon and he is a good guy. He doesn't sell crap cars and specialises in Euros like Audi, VW and Citroen.

CHeers for your comments. Seems like very high kms, and yes its a big car for the 1.8 to lug around.

thejazzpianoma, Apr 15, 8:39am
Its highish km's but not Huge km's. Also the 1.8T is a pretty stroppy unit so I would suggest actually driving it before you write it off as a slug. I just wanted to err on the side of caution as I have only experienced the wagon with the V6's. My concerns are only with torque spread rather than actual output, it may prove to be quite capable.

EDIT: I see its miles not km's. So yes is getting up there a bit. Still worth a look though and perhaps considering if its been well looked after. The price makes more sense now.

During my time in the UK I had a 2004 Audi A4 1.9 Tdi 6 speed, it was awesome work car with endless torque curve.

Nice car, good / hard to find spec = buy it.

trogedon, Apr 15, 9:57am
They're not that big / heavy and its a turbo and its depends what its used for.

vag.central, Apr 15, 10:04am
They probably weigh around 1700kg, and with only 150hp its slow, fully loaded on a trip it would be torture. plus its only a fwd so no good for big turbo kits

boardrider, Apr 15, 10:11am
Well I'm in Chch and the big TDi is here. I'm going to have a look at both at some stage. Anyone got experience with the 2.5 Tdi!

vag.central, Apr 15, 10:16am
Dont think anyone will, its a 5cyl, think they are around 110kw so heaps of power, it will be bullet proof no doubt.

boardrider, Apr 15, 10:19am
Mike, you better know what your talking about because I'll be after you. I had a 1.9Tdi and that was a lovely drive in the A4 Platform. I guess 2.5 litre Diesel with similar technology would be awesome.

boardrider, Apr 15, 10:32am
Yes I know, the 2.2 would cost a lot for recond.

vag.central, Apr 15, 10:35am
Shouldnt have been too bad if they got someone who knew what they were doing. Ive just picked up an s6 for an engine donor, only done 120k

boardrider, Apr 15, 10:40am
Well I'm looking for a reliable cruiser good for the open road, will it be the 1.8T or the 2.5Tdi. I'm a bit dubious about the kms.

boardrider, Apr 16, 9:30am
Well I posted to the seller of the A6 2.5Tdi regarding a request of getting a pre service check. Haven't heard back yet

vag.central, Apr 16, 12:17pm
Who are you going to use!

thejazzpianoma, Apr 16, 10:52pm
As much as I like Audi/VW Diesels. I wouldn't be in a big rush for the one you are looking at because its the older shape. The newer shape like the 1.8T is miles ahead of things IMO, especially if safety is a concern.

thejazzpianoma, Nov 7, 4:57pm
Also, I think you should drive the 1.8T before you make any decisions.
The sedan version only weighs about 1350KG belive it or not (remember there is no big engine or auto to weigh it down) I wouldn't expect the wagon to weight significantly more.
So, with that in mind I wouldn't make any great leaps of judgement on performance until you drive it.
