What with the hassle of RUC and the increasing cost of diesel, why would they bother! Hardly worth owning a diesel now and in my case cheaper to own a petrol

Not necessarily the case at all. It can swing quite a lot either way depending on the type of vehicle, km's travelled etc.

In the case of the Suzuki the Fiat motor is by far the best performing in the range, completely transforming the car performance wise, yet for the typical town type running these cars do is likely to leave you around $500 a year better off with regards to running costs (assuming typical NZ annual km's travelled)

I am pretty sure its also the lowest maintenance engine with no cambelt and 30'000km oil changes.
