So you think car insurance here is expensive?

Young 18 year old student in the UK was quoted the equivalent of $50,000 to insure his $1500, 1600ccVolvo S40!He'd written off a Vauxhall Corsa having slid on black ice, so was expecting a bit of a hike.Remember, 3rd party insurance is compulsory in the UK.

He was already paying $5,000 so was pleased to get another lower quote- only $25,000.

With those sort of rates, I presume not many 17 year olds (minimum driving age) can afford to run a car, so I wonder if that has a major impact on their accident statistics!

Even with a 45 year good driving record, (25 years claim free in the UK), I tried to insure a car when I went over in 2005 for an extended stay - quote was $3,000 third party only, on a $1,000 Vauxhall Cavalier.

So who wants to start a car insurance company in the UK with me!

Just bring a little bit of those prices to NZ so the repairers here can earn a decent living.

I have always wondered why its so expensive for insurance over there. Is there a Government levy on it instead of ACC or something!

I do know they have more claims from what I have heard but even so prices seem a bit out of hand.

My 30 year old son in the UK pays about $850 for a small car.

Wages are higher over there but car parts are generally cheaper - especially secondhand ones.Scrap yards are a real treasure hunt too! Most run (or used to) on the pick a part principle.

No ACC over there but the road tax/rego is also a fair bit higher than here.

I recall seeing a doco about the RS200 escort, it quickly became uninsurable due to amount of crashes people were having in them.

In days of old = Mini = 1, Mini Cooper x2 Mini Cooper S x 3.Bearing in mind just about any current family car available here is quicker than an original Cooper S, it just shows how things have changed. In the UK, I believe even the modern BMW Cooper S still attracts a hefty loading.
