Need some advice on a v8 exhaust.

fr8liner, Jan 29, 9:50pm
Hi all.

we have just bought a 2000 vt v8 holden, we are going to take it into a few places next week to find out what we can do to get the 'grunty' v8 sound from the muffler as it only has factory pipes, we were wondering if any of you have done this! We know that we can put a big bore on but we are looking for a slightly cheaper option! Do you have any suggestions we can mention to the shops so we sort of look like we know what we are talking about ;) THANKS

mufflers & exhaust pipes are easy to make from relativly cheap supplys

but once made they are charged out for a fortune

your cheapest option would be to have a go at making replacement mufflers yourself . its immensly satisfying & one of the performance features of your drivetrain you can improve on with basic tools

Just remember that if you get it wrong you'll end up with a god awful drone inside the car. You'll wish you'd left it alone.

Out of curiosity how much did it cost you! I have a 2000 ss commodore with the 6 speed manual that im looking at selling so keen to get the knowledge on sale price from someone who just bought one.

My commodore has Genie headers with a full twin system with balance pipes pretty much exactly as described above. Except I have a feeling mine may be 3inch not 2.5inch. I absolutely love the sound, no drone in car, but shit what an awesome sound for the chev engine. not as good as the old 304 engines though.

X-pipe into twin mandrel bent 2.25" piping, one straight through muffler either side. Done. Perfect sound. X pipes merge the gasses and generate better scavenging than H pipes. I have a full system from Magnaflow if you are interested ( x pipe, mufflers and tips). 2.5" is good, but if you don't plan on doing any engine mods, twin 2.25 will be more than enough.

Thanks guys does anyone know if i took the rear muffler off and replaced it with straight pipe would make much difference!

Ours is a 6spd manual with the gen3 5.7 also with 75000kms and we paid 19k.Their is another around here for sale exactly the same with a few marks etc with 130000kms for $16990 hope that helps :-)

Would probably drone a bit. If you really want to go on the cheap, run a dual 2.25" press bent system with two hot dog style mufflers (resonators) in each side, will sound tough as. and cost you under $400

After the sound :)

Yeah a mate of mine suggested that also, was trying to see what some options were for when we head into some places. thanks for your help :)

Look what is being done to reduce drone, photo half way down shows the J pipe, and it works.

you need to be carefull typing stuff out like that , unless you have made mufflers you dont really know what makes noise & what doesnt

resonators , like mufflers vary wildly in design , & the end result sound is entirely up to the design

Cheers for that mate. Id love to get that much for mine haha. Mines just ticked 130,000kms too. Im guessing you bought that one in canturbury that was for sale that an older guy owned!

Wonder if I would get $15k for my one up here in the north island.

What I would do is see if you can get a HSV system off a similar model. There are guys upgrading all the time and the old ones come up on trademe now and again.

Yeah think it came from geraldine, he traded it in on another car from the dealer we got it from. Its in great nick, just needs a grunty v8 sound! Its been well looked after.

lol worth a go

Sounds like you have my old car there, Dont be fooled even the factory exhaust makes a good sound outside because its a manual. I have had several v8 commodores and if you not prepared to spend the money ie $2500 to $3500 for headers and exhaust leave it as cutting bits off or addding mufflers wont help, but if you get the full package you will get 20killiwatts more grunt and save gas plus upset your neighbours I suggest you go to magoo mufflers or talk to V8 commodore specialist in chch Kevin Geary Performance 03 3481367

Start by replacing the exhaust bearings, it can make a world of difference.
