Getting a bit hotter towing

Is it normal for a vehicle to get a bit warmer whilst towing!

Is a Ford XG ute 1994, towing a horse float with horse in it.

Don't know how well temp gauge reads accurately. Sits at just under quarter whilst being driven, but when towing, doubles and goes to half!

No good!

Half is fine, and yes it will get hotter because the engine is working harder and creating more heat. It would still pay to get your radiator rodded out properly by a radiator specialist though, it should really be done regularly but most people don't bother. (Myself included) and get them to test the thermostat while they're at it. Just for peace of mind more than anything else.

and fit an external cooler if ute has a auto trans, will keep auto cool and also drop the temp in coolant as hot auto fluid is not running through bottom of radiator

it has an external auto cooler.
