Becoming a money-making rort for testers.
(just as WOFs have become).

shotgunkid, May 6, 4:12pm
Yes SMAC, This was written on the test sheet. "Cant wait indefinatly when you have clear traffic from the right and a median strip to turn into. T/O intervention immediate fail"

tonyrockyhorror, May 6, 4:16pm
Only 41% passing. it's a start. We need to half that.

smac, May 6, 5:34pm
AH ok, so he had to intervene.

Here's the thing, your kid felt unsafe to pull into an area of the road specifically designed for him to use in those circumstances. At a basic level this is no different than him not wanting to go on a green light, or giving way to vehicles when they are on a stop sign.end result! He's not ready to be driving alone.

tonyrockyhorror, May 6, 6:13pm
That describes most NZ drivers.

shotgunkid, May 6, 6:17pm
smac how can you possibly know he isn't ready to be driving alone! Ask around, do you and others sit on a flush median waiting to merge! (This wasnt a dedicated lane to turn inot through a median.) I havnt found anyone that does. The LTSA people I spoke to don't do it themselves either.

smac, May 6, 6:33pm
I don't know for sure. All I know is what you've told us: that an approved testing officer has judged him to have failed the criteria for a test pass, and also that he exhibited behaviour indicating he is not at all confident in an everyday driving situation.

If he was MY kid, I'd be glad this was picked up and happy to work with the kid to get his confidence up before sending out alone into the lunacy that is the road.

Actually not true. If he were my kid I wouldn't have sent him off for a test before he was ready. But that's just me.

tonyrockyhorror, May 6, 6:47pm
The LTSA no longer exists - hasn't done for years.

smac, May 6, 6:54pm
Oh and do I do it! Yup, regularly. Turning right onto Rangitikei St in Palmerston North coming out of Super Cheap or Bay Engineers is one example that springs to mind. If you didn't, you'd never get out, which I guess is the situation that was facing your son's testing officer. He has a set amount of time in which to complete the test. If he is being held up by traffic, that's one thing (and not the applicant's fault). But if he's held up because the applicant simply won't move, what other choice does he have!

modie61, May 6, 8:30pm
Beware,no 2 testing officers are the same, as no 2 wof inspectors are the same.

pollymay, May 6, 11:46pm
I have a good one I remember now as well from a driving instructor "you handle the gearshift like a bear, you should be smoother an paw it like a cat"

Does it change gears! Yes, am I grinding the changes or dumping the clutch! no. Why do you care that I grip the shifter firm, thinking back I'm glad I'm done being tested but those idiots

neville48, May 7, 2:48am
Sister went out with the tester and about 200 metres up the road he asks have you got the time , she looked at her watch and answered him and he immediatly failed her for failing to concentrate on the driving or words to that effect, he also said he felt she was too confidant. A bit dirty but hey she had been driving illegally for a couple of years so she may have appeared so.

lugee, May 7, 5:16am
The testers are known for being dodgy. I got failed on my restricted test a while ago for reasons I felt were unfair, so I wrote a letter to NZTA with my complaints and they ordered NZDL's (the company who run the licence tests) manager to issue me with a formal apology and a cheque for the costs of the test. Sure felt good after he had verbally abused me on the phone for taking it up with him.

So, I wouldn't take anything said by a tester as true.

pollymay, May 7, 5:19am
That wasn't a guy named Graham in the auckland area was it! That guy was terrible

mrsscubasteve, May 7, 5:23am
I don't understand how people can fail and whinge about it. thank god you failed is all I have to say.

I passed my full licence under the new regime. it didn't appear overly hard. Had to identify and explain hazards every few minutes (easy!) - it was really just another sunday drive.

lugee, May 7, 6:04am
Nah it was a guy called Rob in Christchurch. I'd actually been told he was a prick by other people. Just so happens that when I complained and it was investigated, turns out he was altering the test sheets after the test to include the bullsh1t that he said he was failing you for.

pollymay, May 7, 6:27am
It's one thing to fail, it's another to fail on things the inspector has adopted as "road code". It's not a test of their personal preferences or how clean your car is, it's a test of your ability to handle the car and the road rules. They focus on all these petty things yet not once be it in school or in some form of test do they put you on an old bit of gravel, ice or any other slippery surface, they never once hit on trailing throttle coming into a bend and things like that.

ANOTHER car crashed outside the shed a couple weeks ago, some young girl with a toyota FWD thing. Bit of rain, touched the picks partway round a notorious bend then fishtailed into a bank. Almost everytime I see an accident out there it's the same conditions, light drizzle, decides halfway through the corner it's too fast then touches the brakes; all downhill from there. NZers can't handle a car for squat even if they do prove they can use that stick that makes the orange lights on the side of the car flash and read a lollipop sign the conveniently tells them how fast they should be going

If the mirror is adjusted properly you will have no cause to move your head (it's head movement that causes dizziness). You are meant to just flick up your eyes then straight back to the road.

i dont think the quality of testing has improved

its still based around law obedience

bigbadboysee, May 8, 3:32am
my flatmate failed twice, first time she was told to turn left and she turned right hahaha, second time she failed to notice 2 speed signs and continued to travel down a road at 70 when it had changed to 50. the fact she passed on the 3rd attempt amazes me because she is a truely terrible driver

3 of them in Hamilton are the same, ie elderly, male and British expats. I was standing outside the testing centre at 8 o'clock one morning and the first 3 customers of the day were waiting the arrival of the TO's, a school boy, a school girl and a moari. So all 3 TO's march up clutching their mirrors and clip-boards, and almost trip over each other making a bee-line for the school girl, true story!

tara101, May 8, 6:55pm
What a load of crap. They have there testing schedule with the applicants nameson the sheets.

tazzaboy2, May 8, 7:02pm
